Jay Peak this weekend, anyone?

Jay is reopening Thursday. The forecast is for 8"-12" tonight, 4"-6" tomorrow. I imagine this will be wet, heavy snow but maybe not at higher elevations. Will it corn up by the weekend? I thought I was done for the year after a wonderful weekend at Sugarloaf, now I wonder. Are you still out there Powderqueen? Have you hung up the sticks? Are you the Wetheavyslopqueen also?

probably better off at the loaf. the loaf is offering twice the vert, way more open terrain, and prob way less skiers than jay.

corn? try mank once the sun hits it, or maybe glue, unless it sets up after fridays sun and warm temps. i guess if jay gets enough, you could walk for it or just ride the lift up higher in maine.

just my .02

p.s. oh, yer from ny, just fly to snowbird. guess they are gettin snow. i may head out there for mothers day weekend if i motivate.

Heh. Really? Meh.

depends on how ya look at it. 2 feet of snow on thawed ground hit by a $hit ton of skiers only to be obliterated by friday for the sun to hit it and glue it up, or ski on more terrain with base, more vert, still some new snow, up to a foot, and way less skier traffic? what are you seeing that i'm not other than 23.2 inches on 2 open runs of 1000 vert and a slow triple?

Base? You call this a base?

Rog is right about the weekend. It is going to be hot and all that new snow is going to mank city and it will be a groomer weekend.

But Thursday at Jay will probably be one of the best days of the year. Wish I did not have a prior commitment at work. Two open runs? Rog, hello!!! Two OPEN runs! Some of my best days at Jay were when only the Jet was spinning and they only had two open runs!

the wind could be a factor for lifts at jay both thurs and friday, loaf too. i'll be lapping burt ravine on wash at 1st light on friday if the winds subside a bit.

and to admin: you may have great base in utah, but the corn at the loaf on what base they had was easily better than pretty much any corn i've ever skied in utah and aspect never matters here once it's soft. we'll never agree on some things, or most.

the vibe is pretty cool in maine too.

All the better for those that come prepared to earn if needed. Two feet untracked every run with little competition. I guess I will just never understand your aversion to Vermont. I agree that sometimes NoVT can get over hyped and other places can be over looked when they are better (such as the case this year, Maine had a much better season overall than Jay did). But objectively, the only thing better on Thursday than Jay would be earning turns at Mansfield if you would rather earn than get a lift. If the lifts don't run at Jay, more powder for those with leg power. By the weekend, clearly a different matter though, as I will not be skiing Jay on the weekend but rather hoping for low avi conditions by Sunday.

Time to pack the gear for some earned turns at Cannon this afternoon after a short work day! Ultimately, it does not matter where or when people get some this week as long as people go out and GET SOME LATE APRIL POW!

i much prefer earning turns while lifts can't run and don't mind doing it in vermont as i used to do it when i lived there all of the time. i just prefer the terrain on mt washington for pow skiing, or any skiing for that matter and for lift serve, prefer a place like the loaf for it's size, pitch, snow preservation, and vibe. i've also been lucky to hit it on overhead days, and let me tell ya, it don't $uck.

waves r good this morning, headed out now, enjoy cannon, i'll be on washington friday, wind depending.

I'm on vaca this week and we got a cheap condo at Attitash so I'm headed to Jay Thurs AM for the first chair. Not sure where to go Friday. Maybe Jay again, maybe somewhere else. Depending on the avy report, I might go up to Hermit Lake shelters Friday and see what plays out. I expect the avy rating may keep my son and I out of the bowl though. It would be nice to find some lower angle stuff to play in. Maybe there's enough to just ski across the road?

Where should he fly from? Syracuse? Binghamton is not exactly close to the city. In fact, it is probably about the same distance to JFK as it is to Stowe. You should look at a map, NY is a pretty big state.

Another vote for Lange Girl's boyfriend...and river.

The time to be at Jay is tomorrow, if I had to choose between what is open this weekend in the East (regardless of distance), it would be Loaf #1, Jay #2 and MSS #3.

I guess there is a need for another Loaf TR from last weekend. I'll see what I can do before the weekend arrives.

Sugarloaf was great...but the ski season never ends, it moves elsewhere. :troll: Lucky and I were talking in the car on the drive back from Sugarloaf last Sunday, I have to get back to Montreal so a trip to Jay is probably in the cards for me. Not sure if Lucky will be in the Chic Chocs or stay closer to home.

nice to finally meet you patrick! hopefully we'll ski together soon. i figured we'd have a tough time hooking up with the skiing as good as it was. emily and i were gonna just wait at spillway, but couldn't let the corn just sit there without being on it as much as possible.

looks like jay and washington are up to about a foot and a half plus with more coming. i'll be on washington friday before 1st light to ski the deep b4 the sun gets at it.

may and june cometh patrick!

Third time, I believe. Mad in March and TR back in June 2007 (pre-forum days).

Agree...we did the same thing, with the same decision. Great skiers really do think alike. Beer afterwards are sometimes easier...unless you have to drive back to Ottawa and/or have kids around.

Followed by July... 8-[

3rd time indeed, but 1st time to exchange words and shake hands. great skiers DO think alike!

july too \:D/

may will have better cover up high than april unless things really heat up beyond the weekend. glad i have 4 days off for mothers day weekend, i may just ski the rock instead of flying somewhere.

From http://www.firsttracksonline.com/News/2 ... Quite-Yet/ :

There are only two ski resorts still operating in eastern North America, but a major storm is currently in progress and is expected to leave up to two feet (61cm) of new snow at Jay Peak in far northern Vermont, where staffers who originally planned to reopen the resort for one final weekend this Saturday and Sunday, will now open the lifts beginning tomorrow, Thursday, for die-hard powder hounds. The storm has already left 16-22 inches (41-56cm) by early afternoon and was still in progress. The only other operating ski resort in the East, Sugarloaf in Maine continues daily operations through this Sunday, May 2nd. At Sugarloaf, snow began to fall overnight and had accumulated to eight to 10 inches (20-25cm) at the top of the Sugarloaf SuperQuad by 1 p.m. local time. Accumulations at the base of the mountain were measured at two to three inches (five to eight centimeters). Additional snow is expected at Sugarloaf overnight tonight.

I'm thinking that the "lesser base" at Jay is pretty much going to be a non-issue tomorrow:

Edit -- Dammit, Twitpic uses time-limited authkeys on images. Let's try this again -- you have to click for full-size.

Hmmmm....I'll let you know. We're gonna be at Jay early with the rest of the crowd. Attitash is just barely covered with slush. Jay's base is higher so it should be better up there. South of Conway was pretty bare.
