Thank goodness we are going to get some more snow soon. As far as snow conditions go, this was my second worst snow conditions I have skied on this year (which includes those infamous December days in which only The Jet and Haynes were open). Absolutely horrid. I took four runs and went home, completely baffled as I left the Stateside Lodge to a small line of people queuing up to actually pay for lift tickets. I have skied some questionable days this season, but ultimately I have generally decided it was worth the time and gas money to get at least a few runs and dial in the legs a bit more. Not today, complete waste of my morning.

Something wet and precipitation like but not of the frozen variety caked Jay's snow base and froze over slightly. The result was that the groomers were only skiing well for those with well tuned race skis (I would have been a lot more happy today had I a pair of Volkl 6 Stars). Trails on the Stateside of the Bonaventure Quad were essentially scraped and frozen groomer tracks with a deceptive dusting of loose snow. Natural snow trails faired slightly better in most spots, a lot worse in others.

I took four runs opening up with Northway to Wiggle with Northway actually slightly edgable on my first run but Wiggle had me not in good carving form despite the low angle. Really nasty frozen over wet snow, icky, just icky. Cut over to The Jet on a dicey cross cut trail and noticed the groomed section of The Jet was a skating rink. Moguls under the lift line are still poorly developed and in general piss poor shape. I cut over to lower U.N. to avoid the skating rink on Lower Jet and found despicable nasty conditions ("this sucks, this sucks, this sucks" was the mantra I repeated as I slowly picked my way down the thinly covered frozen crap). Derrick Hot Shot? Not so hot but doable and a lot better than The Jet or U.N. Scraped down frozen snow with thin cover and rocks, sweeeeeet. Willard was closed and Lower Haynes (or whatever Jay calls it) was a total skating rink. I tried to carve but was generally doing a lot of sliding. One last try, back up the blue chair for a run down Kitzbeuhel which actually was my run of the day. Horridly rocky and thin and nasty but I could actually cut an edge into the snow pack (when there actually was snow pack to cut into) and had a great mogul line going for all of two bumps. Sweeeeeeeeet. The run out back to Wiggle was just terrible and reminds me why I love Jay's open woods policy.... when there is actually snow to take advantage of said policy.

I was going to take the T-Bar to Tramside, tune up my skis with a sharp edge, and explore whatever Tramside had to offer, but after Kitz, I couldn't bare to be on skis any longer this morning. Sunday isn't worth driving an hour to Jay peak, let along longer if you are considering. Had it been 10-15 degrees warmer with sun shining, the snow would have softened up to a more than acceptable and maybe even delightful condition and consistency. The temp was hovering just below the freezing mark and the snow setup was moist which just was not pleasant in the least.

Some skiers may be debating their Season Pass purchase for next season after the first half of this season tanked so bad. That is folly as it is pretty rare that New England has this much bad luck. Even New England on average is a LOT better than this. However, the recent horrendous weather certainly should give any New England destination skiers prepaying or pre-booking in advanced sufficient pause about when they decide to book. Anything more than a week out is a terrible roll of the dice with the odds against you. If you booked for next week, you are going to get the Jackpot with no crowds. But if you booked for this weekend, you just pissed your money away. Sad state of things in New England.

Not that I really follow Jay Peak's official snow reporting, but I just opened my email and found the 242 Newsletter with the snow conditions and decided to see what Jay Peak was calling for this morning:

Welcome to the weekend and probably the best conditions we?ve had so far this season.

Best conditions of the season?

:bs:

I have skied Jay Peak almost every weekend they have been open and many before they have been open and can say with some authority that Jay Peak has had a TON of better days than today. Also of note, a quick check of the web page has a report indicating a dusting of snow this morning. Conveniently left out is they got some NCP last night too from the looks of things. Also while checking my email just now, I noticed Cannon's snow report does report rain last night. Cheers to Cannon.

I forgot to mention in my initial report, Jay Peak had to close Montrealer. My suspicion based on what I saw when skiing down Northway is they closed this trail because a groomer "reached bottom" and had dug up dirt and rock on the final pitch of Montrealer that dumps onto Northway. A lot of the crap ended up on Northway and it was not pretty. Good decision to close Montrealer but it further shows just how bad things have gotten when the groomers can't even flatten a trail out without digging up dirt and rocks.

This was probably the worst day I have ever had at Jay
Peak. I spent 5 hours in the car for this, I am disgusted with the conditions. Frozen is an understatement. I made sure I hit the demo shop to get a quick edge, I should have spent the 12 dollars I wasted on that on gas to drive home. This is, was not, probably won't be the best weekend of the season. Ktzbuehl shoud not have been open, ducked into beaver which actually had coverage and got reprimanded at the bottom. That should have been open before Kitz was.

Anyways do not waste your gas\money.

Sorry to hear you made the long drive today ccskier. I suspected we might get such a report from yourself today. A report was posted (I think on AZ) earlier in the week about the fresh snow falling on top of rather crappy scraped snow. My anticipation levels were extremely low today, I did not believe the 12" they got would have done much. But I certainly had expected the top layer of snow to be in better condition and the base to be slightly improved.

I disagree about Kitzbeuhel. It was very thin cover, but I have skied much thinner open terrain both at Jay this season and else where. Jay has been pushing the boundaries on what they consider openable thin cover for many weeks now and Kitz was well within those extended boundaries. I doubt the trail opening campaign would have been as aggressive had this season not sucked so bad. I actually appreciate the fact that Jay is keeping stuff open even though it is almost guaranteed base damage. I wish more ski areas would take a lesson, some skiers actually enjoy it (when the snow conditions are good, at least). Also gotta disagree about Beaver being open before Kitz. I took a look into the woods today and say "Nope." I did not look at Beaver specifically so I have no idea what the coverage is, but I am 99% certain it is not ready for prime time and patrol would have a very long day if it was open.

The drive is not so bad, had to vent. Try to make the best of my weekends in VT. I am damn glad I don't pay for a ticket, pass allows you to throw in the towel. Time to relax and sleep in for tomorrow. Going to hold out til Monday and see what happens. I hope I won't be able to get home until Tuesday. Try and make a few turns tomorrow.

Very similar conditions at Burke on Saturday. All man-made groomed runs. THe surface had frozen after the groomers were done with it resulting in a block of ice. THe skiing was extremely fast. The only saving grace was that there was NOBODY there resulting in me staying all day.
Today's storm has been another "bust" for a nearly busted winter. I'm still trying to get my money worth for my pass by the end of the season but it is going to be tough.

I know, another meteorological masterpiece. Skied about and hour and half yesterday at Jay. Again, nothing had changed. Packed it up went to Burlington for the night with friends. Skied at Stowe today. What another world. I had a pass there for 5 years, have been at Jay for past 3-4. I have to say they do know how to do more with their snow over there. I love Jay's character, but the snowmaking and grooming is lacking. I guess in past years I have not cared much since I don't spend much time on the groomed trails, but this year it is down right dangerous. We did get a good 6-8 in Stowe which brightened things up. Where is the 12-15???? Took about 6 hours from Stowe to the Cape which usually takes about 4 and a quarter. Today was great to end a disapointing weekend on a good note.

Well maybe you should just stay down the cape for a while ccskier and leave the snow to us folks up here. I'm sure your husband misses having you around the house on the weekends anyway.

I think Jay got less snow then Sugarbush and Stowe this weekend.
I drove from Waterbury to Jay Saturday morning, the snow fall dropped off
fast as I drove through Eden.

Everyone with snowmaking, has a rock hard and frozen base.
If the frozen base isn't there, you are skiing on rocks.

My impression in 2003 was that Jay doesn't hold up well in adverse weather vs. Stowe or MRG. Stowe's ski terrain is on the leeward side of Mansfield while Jay looks quite exposed to wind. So you're going to end up with more boilerplate trails in the latter situation no matter what management does. Save Jay for the big new snow days (and when there's a real base) to take advantage of its extra snowfall.

tony's assessment is spot on. the wind and exposure of jay does not lend well to snow retention on the open slopes. especially considering snow storms are usually followed with high winds. great for building up base in the woods. jay's snow making is less than ideal as well. seems like it takes them a long time to spread it around (compared to other comparable mountains in size and price tag).
