i only got two runs plus a traverse from the metro quad, so i do not consider my brief report to be a complete and comprehensive review of mountain conditions by any means. but we were able to make a quick assessment of the situation rather quickly given the setup.

metup with nhski for day two of the weekend and as i predicted in my report yesterday, powder was long gone replaced with packed powder generally. what i had not predicted was the wind buff both in and out of the trees would be so substantial that a poor setup would have many folks who did not ski saturday wondering if there was any powder this weekend. open slopes and groomers were crappy hard packed loose granular surfaces which left much to be desired.

on our first run, i actually made a few nice turns down the goat before running into scraped and icy conditions a the S turn under the freezer which is always a suspect spot on the mountain. we continued down green mountain boys which also had nasty loose gran and hoped into north glade. i was hoping that having the freezer and tram off line for half the day yesterday meant better conditions in tram side glades than stateside glades which took the full brunt of 8 hours of traffic. unfortunately, the wind buff even terrorized the woods and north glade was no exception with variable wind buffed snow and general thin cover, yum. a work out for the first run of the day to say the least (especially considering i was already hurting from saturday). the snow was better lower down on north glade but not worth a repeat. with the freezer off line despite NO WIND and a blue bird day !!! (what's up with that?) the tram had a two car wait and looked like they were taking their time between runs. we jumped on the metro quad figuring the more wind protected areas off the jet would be the place to be today.

sure enough, great snow still in timbuktu. fine packed pow despite some thin cover. after a few turns in timmy, i took a fall that i had no business taking. i looked incredulously at the thin cover snow pack when i should have been looking incredulously at my skis that went "instant tele" AT style even though they were regular alpine bindings. i didn't notice the break yet, so i continued down at full tilt before going over the handle bars again. at this point, nhski suggested lining up for some pictures, but i decided it was wasted effort since i wasn't in good form. another few turns and WAM i had that distinct instant tele feeling and i knew something was wrong. i slid down sideways and sure enough the core had split open under my boots. "i'm done" i told nhski and we made a safe traverse out of the woods onto derrick which had fantastic soft packed powder. i was able to make some damn fine turns down derrick considering i had a busted ski under foot, almost going over the handle bars only once lower down on derrick where the snow was more diced up.

it would have been a fantastic blue bird day to lap the jet. c'est dommage.

some pictures from this morning including nhski in action on timbuktu.

i would just like to add props to jay peak for a well balanced and accurate report owning up to the powder being tracked up and slopes being wind blown. though the report states all lifts running, so i really want to know why the flyer didn't have chairs on the line this morning, that was just puzzling considering the lack of wind.

I just want to offer my thanks to you and all other contributers from northern Vermont that keep me pumped up to get up there(for the past 12 years I get a week with great friends from Johnson, Vermont). The northern Greens have a big spot in my daily imagination as I mind-ski Jay, Smuggs, and Stowe. Can only imagine having these places as my home mtn. Keep up the good work and photography and I'll be seeing y'all late feb.

Got first tram on Saturday morning...was really pleased to see them running the tram with some tough winds out there. Everyone on the packed 1st tram was very appreciative of the effort. Was the 1st one out of the tram and headed right for Vallhala....excellent snow, deep powder... got the 3rd tram up and headed right for Green Beret...excellent snow, deep powder. Saturday was the day... the mountain is really starting to look like it should. We found great snow all day and when they did close the tram and flyer, we took the red chair up and headed off the back to cut under JFK to Beaver and at 3:00 we all got fresh lines the whole way down. Best weekend of the season and only looks like it will get better the next couple of weeks. I do wish though they would update the lift status somehow. It was a bluebird day with no wind on sunday and they were not running the flyer...but the snow phone said "all lifts running today" at 6:30 or so. Wouldn't it be a good idea to update the snow phone with lift schedules at 8:00 or 8:30. I dont know that just seems to make sense to me.

This weekend sounded great. I will be back up in two weeks, hopefully i won't be the usual mid-winter deep freeze and there will be some snow for me.

Can't add too much to the reports from above. We rode both days (sat/sun) and found lots of great snow. Upper mountain finally had enough snow to hit some hidden patches (barely) and the lower glades found us in some long deep turns (first of the year) ...

Some of the best slashes of the weekend had to be the wind drifts that were forming around the mountains sunday. Blinded by the sunshine and the pow in my face :D ...

Best lift riding weekend so far.

I will have to call out Jay for running one of the snow guns half way up the flyer and not having it on MIST setting ! WTF. We got covered in water on a -30° day !! thank god I got my hand over my goggles just in time... I don't know which jack*ss set that up .. but it sucked.
(to clarify - riding up !!! not poaching down when it closed)
