This was a weird, interesting, and occasionally really fun day of skiing. Started off with my skins on for the first time since December :D Nice to be earning some turns again as the powder machine has finally been turned off and fresh snow required hiking. Unfortunately, temperatures were warm this morning and the fresh untracked was heavy and difficult to ski. Still a fun adventure.

Finally made it up to Jay Peak around 11a after my morning jaunt and after switching to alpine gear it began to rain. This was not sleet, not hail, not freezing rain, etc. Nothing crystalline about it. It was absorbed into the jacket instead of bouncing off. Well, it was a fantastic two months of below freezing skiing without a thaw, but the melt out begins today. Thankfully the base is still very deep. At one point today, I plunged my pole down into the snow below the handle :o

Shortly after the rain began, Jay turned off the lifts due to fear of lightning but that was a short lived pause in the action. The unfortunate result was every single skier and rider either went inside to eat or queued up at the lifts  Nothing could be done about the situation, but it made for a rough half hour of redistributing all the skiers and made my planned early lunch before the rush hell. I actually came back and left the lodge twice before I was able to find reduced traffic on my third try for food.

Snow that was packed down skied much better and easier than fresh and untracked as a general rule. I found some great lines in the trees on a packed snow base that was soft, edgable, and a delight despite the occasional rain that continued on and off throughout the day. Nearing the end of the day, I actually made the three tram car wait because I had never skied the Face Chutes and wanted to get them in this year. I took the line directly under the tram itself and was rather unimpressed. It looks a lot steeper from below and from the sides.

With three passes to Mad River Glen still left and not being able to ski tomorrow, that may be my last day at Jay Peak for March unless I can fit one day in the last week of the month which is doubtful. Back to Jay for the first two weeks in April to close out my first season pass of my life... still unsure if I truly got my monies worth or not, but the Burke days sure helped. Without the Burke days, I would not be buying again next year but I think with the Burke mid-week reciprocal, I managed to bang out enough days not only to pass break even, but also make it worth the trouble of not having freedom to go where I want on non-powder days.

Hi Steve,

We got a bit of freezing drizzle in town today. Any comments of what the main trails will look like?

One day at Jay (monday or tuesday) is a possible option for the family, we'll definitely hit Mad on one (or two) of those days.

My daughter Morgane wants to explore as many ski areas as possible. She loves Mad and was looking forward last year to ride the single solo (we didn't go last year 'cause MRG was close on our Spring Break).

Patrick, I couldn't tell you what the moisture will do. The snow was delightful today despite the moisture. Natural snow trails were edgable and enjoyable and a bit soft. Depends if things freeze up over night probably. If it doesn't get too cold, shouldn't be a problem but who knows.

Thanks Steve,

I'm looking at my options right now for a possible second day. One day is going to be at Mad. I'm also skiing tomorrow in the region but further with Morgane then leaving after supper for Montreal.

Options:

Back to Mad for a second day.
Jay (I have a pair of 2-for-1).
Sutton (I have a discount).

Weather for Tuesday is uncertain.

Hey,

Your posts have been helpful for me because I'm mulling making my annual day trip up to Jay from Portland, Maine this Tuesday the 13th. Right now the weather's calling for nasty weather, but I still am willing to go as long as the temp stays above freezing because after it drops down again toward the end of the week the snow will be pretty rough.

I'm wondering if it's crap already though? If you guys or anyone else can update this after sunday and/or monday with what the tree skiing is like up there it would be REALLY helpful for me.

Thanks!

Kapow.... it rained consistently on Saturday and then hardened up over night. Sunday was awful... nothing good about it. The woods, trails... all bad, very very bad. Forecasts for rain all week is a sure bet up here. You might want to rethink your trip up to Jay. Things are in a very bad state right now. This weekend was truly heartbreaking. There is a great amount of snow left in the woods and it is completely useless.

godzillavt, you have confirmed my worst fears. While skiing on Saturday was overall really good all things considered, I had feared the moisture heavy snow would freeze up. Apparently it did not freeze bad enough for Jay to close any trails, but skill on that "frozen post rain" hard pack snow is not fun. The good news is the base is still very deep, we will just need a refresher storm to get things back to where they were. Or, worst case, corn snow weather would be helpful but hopefully not for a few more weeks.

I was gonna mention that with that nice base that corn snow season might be spectacular, but I would just as well wait a few weeks for that too.

Definitely going to be warm all week until Friday or so.

I am glad I made the last minute call to stay home for the weekend. I am actually heading up tomorrow night, ski Wed-Sun if decent. I just spoke to my wife she said it is 42 in Montgomery. That means 38-40 at the hill, need higher temps than that to make it skiable again. I will be sleeping in and skiing afternoons probably. The 15 day outlook (although far fetched) does not look too promising, but they are calling for some accumulation snow later in the week.

We made it to Jay on Sunday afternoon and did the afternoon. Nothing like afternoon the day after a rain and a morning of being scraped down. When Derrick Hotshot is an icefield, it ain't good.

Regroup for Monday morning. What a difference a day makes. Kudos to the Jay grooming crew for making chicken salad out of chicken poop. The runs were basically hardpack but not icy, good cruising conditions, and icing up wasn't a real problem throughout the day. It was a bluebird morning with some cloud around noon but finished up bluebird by last lift. And liftlines were negligible.

Just watching the people told the story. Sunday closing, it looked like a bunch of hardrock miners coming off the night shift, Monday afternoon there were smiles all around and life was good.

For Tuesday the forecast was 40% chance of rain and possible freezing rain in the morning, not what you want riding the flyer. We went and did half a day at Owl's Head before heading back to Ottawa. For $15 CDN at Owl's it wasn't a big deal if we got rained out. Owl's Head was in good shape but the snow was mashed potatoes and after a 1/2 of ice wars and a full day of non-stop fun the day before, everyone's legs voted to pack it in instead of a couple more hours of heavy snow. Still fun though.

We did check out the base of Jay on our way out and I think whoever was there may have had a really good day Tuesday. The weather was NOT rain and the cloud cover was high, and the parking in front of the Jay hotel was barely full at 9 am. Zippo liftlines and no reason conditions wouldn't be the same or better than Monday. The higher altitude of Jay likely kept things from getting as soft as Owl's Head where the peak is not much higher than Jay's base. Love to hear from someone who was there Tuesday 'cause I think it was a great day.

I still have a couple of Jay 2 for 1 coupons left - no blackout dates. ie. include weekends and holidays. These are good anytime until April 30, 2007. PM me with an address if you can use them and I'll mail them out. Rather someone take advantage of it.

Suppose to have some snow for this weekend it seems, sure would be nice to refreshen the base. I just got back from a two and a half day business trip to the flatlands (sometimes, I actually miss traffic and lights! you can take the flatlander out of the city but you can't take the city out of the flatlander and all that jazz...) and man oh man did snow in the valley's disappear. Last week I was bundling up in -25 degree weather and this afternoon I was zipping around down in Massachusetts at 65 with the windows down and sun glasses on. How about that 80 degree temperature switch in a week! Looking forward to the fresh this weekend, plans are two days at the Glen.
