I was able to kill two birds with one stone by picking up my season pass today (thus beating the weekend crowds) and grab some turns on The Jet. Normally I am an early bird on ski days, but I held back this morning knowing that the high was supposed to be 42 at the base and snow making would definitely be off by noon. Sure enough, not long after I started skinning, the lower guns were turned off and as soon as I reached the top of The Jet, the last gun was eliminated. Perfect timing. Derick still had enough snow to skin on which was nice. Haynes still had a lot of snow from the early November snow making effort, but it was horrendously glaciated. Tons of caked snow and ice were falling off the chairlift and huge (often icy) whales dominated skier's left, so I stayed center on the descent and had some fantastic turns and a few slides. I think the snow making guys should have pulled the plug a little sooner, the temps went above freezing and they were still blowing which caused a little bit of icing, nothing too bad, but certainly not the high quality snow they were able to blow during the evening. It was a fun run but not worth a second skin up, so I called it a day knowing I can always have quantity this weekend with the rest of a capacity Jet Triple, but the fun of one run for the price of none is not to be beat, even when conditions are not ideal.
The snow, snow guns, bright sky, and sunny day made for unreal picture taking. Very beautiful out there today, glad I took the trip.
