i can not believe jay is charging $45! i was expecting it to be bad and definitely a lot worse than cannon (hell, just comparing open terrain), but i wasn't expecting it to be horrible. if i didn't have a pass to jay and/or was interested in another day of hiking, i definitely would have been paying $25 at cannon.
the jet and haynes were open along with the connecting trails back to the tram and condos. the web site says U.N. is open which apparently it was yesterday (lower half) but had a rope today. didn't look worth while skiing any ways. crowds were slightly more manageable than the past two weeks due to the addition of one more trail, but conditions are total crap, probably the worst since jay opened. the steep upper sections of both jet and haynes were skating rinks with many skiers and boarders throwing the planks side ways and holding on for dear life, occasionally taking some rather long slides. i took one run down haynes which was not that hot and decided to make use of the bumps under the jet triple chair. the bumps were variable with inconsistent lines and occasional scraping and icy sections near the towers. it was enough to get my legs and blood pumping but not enough to be enjoyable or keep my interest level. i took four runs and called it a day. pretty easy for me to take four runs on a season pass and two hour round trip drive, i would have hated to have driven any further and paid $45, though i suspect most folks at jay had the two for one deal going on or were part of the telefest. suffice to say, jay needs more trails and more snow baaaaaaaad.
jay's snow making operations should really focus on opening intermediate terrain from the jay triple ASAP. i think intermediate terrain is more important than having haynes open. narrow expert level terrain is not a good option for early season skiing with high traffic. i think i saw some snow making smoke from the tramside area. the challenges of getting this area all connected up on so many lifts early season is evident and doesn't look like an easy job.
part of the reason conditions sucked so bad on jet and haynes is intermediate skiers (and some experts!!!!) were sliding down the steep sections because they had no other alternative. they obviously were not enjoying the nasty parts and would have benefited from an alternative. montrealer to northway to meadows or wiggle would do the trick. i know that is a huge amount more acres and terrain, but it is an option in desperate need. skiing both cannon yesterday and jay peak today and only looking at open terrain and snow making, i was blown away by how much more snow making cannon had going and how much better snow conditions held out. i know this is a rough start to the season but i expected a bit more given the recent cold snap. i am discounting the fresh snow completely as the trails were picked clean and the woods picked it up.
