I had expected to be late to the party but held out hope that the supposed seven inches that fell Thursday might still be hiding in the woods some where (I still can not believe Ashland/Plymouth got more than a foot but Jay only got seven inches!). I was back channeled about possibly earning turns at Cardigan and shame on me for picking lift serviced over earned turns. I can face it, I got greedy and figured my knowledge of the mountain would pay off.

Well, it only took three runs for me to figure out that everything accessed by a lift had been played hard. Tracked out? More like bumped out. Driving up 242 and seeing a field of moguls on Can Am and U.N. had me bumming before I even got to the lot. The seven inches from Thursday was long gone and fully played even in the less traveled area.

I guess I could have sucked it up and skied bumps in the trees all day. But after my giant gash of a core shot last week at Burke, I had forgotten to pick my skis up at the shop yesterday. #-o So I was forced onto touring gear and I have determined that my G-Rides NEED to be replaced ASAP. My skiing was abysmal today. Felt like I was taking first turns of the season all over again. Eyeing the new Zzeros and hoping for a price reduction after prime time selling season has ended. I swear I can wait another two or three months. I HOPE I can wait another two months, because the decision to leave Jay after three runs because I did not feel comfortable on the packed snow in the trees did not sit well.

Just as well though, I brought skins for backup plan just in case. When ever Jay does not update their conditions report one extra time after 8am heading into a weekend, I know something is up. Sometimes saying nothing speaks louder than shouting about how many feet in the past week does. Conditions report for Friday indicated packed snow and firm surfaces, I while I was hopeful knowledge of the mountain would help, I was out of luck.

Anyways, backcountry in the area provided rewards with untracked dense powder. Breaking trails sucks but fresh untracked certainly does not! Snow got in under my skins at the tip making for a bad skin/ski connection resulting in lots of sinking, back sliding, and frustration. I was too stuburn to fix the issue since I was almost there. Poling down I forcefully sunk my pole halfway before it stopped and it did not stop because it hit ground. There was about half a foot of dense powder on top of the packed down base. The dense powder made the low angle turns more of a figure 11 with occasional dances to the side so I at least felt like I was turning. More like steering. It was fun. Not sure if it was worth $20+ in gas but better than putzing around at home wondering how good it is.

Killer base and the NCP will be short lived. Next snow storm that rolls in will put us back in business. Until then, you may be seeing reports from Cannon, Cardigan, Moosilauke, or other local BC.

I did get boot to knee deep untracked today... but that is another story from another location..... :D

yo riv!
don't be afraid to head south in these situations. still untracked at areas down here on not yet opened slopes with patrol asking how it's skiing. skied pawtuckaway today in amazing conditions. give a report of cardigan if you go.
i feel your pain. been there in the skunked by sugarloaf should've skied corn south days.

Tony may make some comparisons between Patrick and I in a bid for most crazy east coast skier for this. It really was super powder in the boot to knee deep range. If only for four or five turns, the two runs I took were only lacking in vertical. This just speaks to Rog's point, I really should have stayed local. Then again, I have come to berate myself for not trusting my intuition on Jay. Gave doing the local thing some thought but decided against it, turned out my instinct was incorrect. Still got some good powder in the Jay BC for minimal effort though, so it was all good.

 unbelievable... complaining about powder bumps...more of a rarity than fresh tracks ever are in new england

Yeah. You should probably have enjoyed those powder bumps today, because we all know what kind of bumps they will be after tomorrow :( .

ya tony, until the next storm hits. many would not want to ski lift served until after the new year anyway. i totally agree with river complaining about "powder" bumps, tough to go to that after spending so much time in the fall skiing untracked, especially when 70% of our days have been pow days thus far. knowing jay there probably wasn't much "powder" left in those bumps. this rain event couldn't come at a more appropriate time imo.
like the few jay bc pics alot.

Poked around a little at Jay yesterday myself. There were some moments on trails that were a little sketchy - the top part of Deliverance for example but there were moments of pure bliss.

Andre's dream had some great lines in there. Yes, tracked but still beautifully tracked lines. Then, we pushed out to the north of beaver pond. Wow. Untracked and deep. We had line after line of knee-deep powder. Heavier stuff than its been but skied great. Unfortunately, we missed the cut back and ended up having to hike out to the lower cross-country trails. Not bad, but we had to cross a small river. Worth it? I say yes my friend would disagree. After that we learned our lesson - cut back hard to the ski area after the cliff bands.

There were no "powder bumps." The bumps were hard pack. Joegm, please take my comments in context!!! You take so much out of context. I enjoy skiing bumps. Had I picked up my alpine boots from the shop, I would have skied bumps all day (which by the way are not more of a rarity than untracked powder from my experience but that is beside the point). Here is the context! I went to Jay rather than skiing local backcountry (completely untracked for sure) because I thought I could score powder. My perspective on the report was tilted by the fact that I was expecting to find some untracked but didn't and could have just stayed local and experienced boot deep untracked. When I saw seeing those trails bumped up from 242 as I approached the mountain, in context, I knew that meant powder was probably long gone by the time bumps are that defined, something that hasn't happened yet this season. The only thing that is unbelievable are your hostilities towards someone that actually enjoys skiing bumps.... just not all the time and especially not when I could be skiing powder.

Hey joe, you don't see me  and saying "unbelievable" when you are skiing bumps on a powder day, do you? To each their own for crying out loud.

We all make "where to ski" mistakes from time to time. Riverc0il made almost none last year, so perhaps perhaps some of us were too quick to critique this one.

But when it comes to "where to ski" mistakes, joegm skiing Loon Dec. 17 has to rank near the top of the list.

aw come on river and ice.. settle down would ya

as for the charges brought by district attorney crocker... i plead guilty for the loon call  and i accept the judge admin's sentence of 1 day of skiing "hardpacked" bumps at jay peak  (although for the record , if you look at the post, i was never critical of the choice to ski jay... i don't care where anyone chooses to ski.. i was laughing about the idea post of being disappointed about coming upon what seemed to me , based on skiing mad river glen a few days prior , and having to ski in god forsaken new england for the past 9 years, some nice moguls...i guess the bumps at jay were not so nice , and apparently were of the " hardpacked" kind".... ( " i guess it depends on what your definition of is , is..."
or what " hardpacked is " for that matter )

merry christmas all :P
