Jay lived up to its reputation yesterday, with the northwesterly winds howling once again. We didn't even consider getting on the Green Mt. Freezer, and even the new Metro Quad was running low-speed and stopping often due to the wind.

It was a rare low-key day for me at Jay yesterday. I was with some friends visiting from flatter lands and therefore couldn't dive into some of my favorite Jay Peak haunts. That was fine with me, though, for after skiing 6 days out of 9, and an open-to-close day at Sutton the day before, I was perfectly content with some mellow cruising.

This report therefore only applies to primarily groomers. The only glades we skied all day were Bushwhacker and Moonwalk Woods, both of which had nice, soft surfaces albeit tracked out in the main lines. Other trails of note:

Haynes: Downright icy, groomed flat
Lower Jet: delightful, groomed and soft
Ullr's: Windswept on the final pitch above Beaver Pond, otherwise groomed and nice
Vermonter: A bit harder than "firm"
Hell's Crossing: Soft groomed
Lower Kitz/Sweetheart: Soft groomed
Queen's Highway: Soft groomed

I told you we didn't get around much...

Cover was there, to be sure. 100% operation, and no rocks or thin spots were spotted. Crowds were heavy, especially in the obsolete Tram Haus cafeteria, but liftlines were minimal (longest was on the Jet Triple at about 5-8 minutes) and most lifts were ski-on. Snow fell in varying intensities all day, and it was positively cranking when we left around 3:30 although the wind never abated. (Wind? At Jay Peak? Go figger!)
