Posted by email, just because I can

Heavy snow continues to fall, with 6-8" on the ground and no
let-up in sight. Roemer is saying, again, that up to 20" isn't out of
the question (by Sunday). Tough storm to call so check back and we'll
keep you in the loop.
jay peak snow reporting was a hot topic last year as i recall. i am
paying a little more attention this year since i get mid-week free on my
burke pass. are they so desperate to get people to jay peak that they
are quoting roemer??? who still believes any reports this guy writes
any ways? i have read so many roemer reports that have busted it is
rediculous. i think quoting a 'possible' 20" by sunday given the fact
this storm busted so bad is in bad taste. who knows, they just might
get that much snow by sunday. fine, this thread is total crap. but
shouldn't they wait until the snow has landed before suggesting
something like that?

just wanted to stir the pot on the always sketchy issue of what ski
areas are putting up on their snow report pages :)

Yeah I got a good laugh out of that earlier too. Looked like the picture of the day with the ruler in the snow had the ruler in a bit of a drift too. I'm gonna be at jay a lot this year so I'm sure I'll find out how much they do or don't lie about the snow.

Yeah, Romer is pretty heavy handed when it comes to dishing out predicted snow totals. I've been suckered by thier reports in the past.Sometimes I think they meant to post it in centemeters not inches. I use channel 9 weather and NWS to make my judgement on how much they get. 99.9% of ski resorts twist and stretch the truth and facts almost as much as our government does with it's foriegn policies.
Telling a powder skier thier may be 20 inches of snow is like telling a junkie thier may be 100 free bags of smack on the other end of town. It doesnt matter if it is there or not, they are going to investigate regardless, and then want to kick your ass when they find it's not there.

New photo's of the day up on Jay Peak site this morning of powder skiing , while I am looking out at about one inch of blowing snow drifting around ( hard to take ) . What's the overall mountain snow depth in North East VT? Is the situation improving past rock hard machine covered trails that were soaked with rain earlier this week.

Sugarloaf has contracted with him this year too. So far he's been 0 for 2 on his storm forecasts.

14 inches forecast last week was about 8.
5 inches forecast for Thursday night was a dusting.

north east VT here in StJ there isn't even enough snow to measure in inches, but it's plenty white out. definitely an elevation only storm yet again which has been the trend so far this season. the spine of the greens from the MRV through jay looks to have gotten decent snow but i still have yet to see 20.

stowe is reporting 14-20 inches and it must have been somewhere near that because their trail count jumped from 7 to 38. i'm kicking myself for not being there today, but the weather forecast is looking like things will hold up nicely through next weekend.

i'm sure it was a very nice day, but don't be fooled by those low tele-turns. the videos show shin to knee deep snow. hopefully we'll get a firsthand report tomorrow.

Yeah, in the videos it looked more like shin-knee deep. You know how untrustworthy those telemarkers are.

On the forecasting snow topic, ..i always feel its better to err on the conservative side. This does 2 things:
1)It balances meteorologists' tendency to get excited about snow events, and "wish cast".
2)People will be very happy to get 12" out of a 4" forecast, but not the other way around.

Number 2 also applies to reporting snow. Alta is a perfect example where happy skiers are getting face shots with a 7" report.

I'm sure my comments are regarded by some as being those of a sourpuss. All the Sierra resorts are hyping the 3 feet of snow that fell this week. That's the first meaningful snow of the year, and it's still going to suck at Christmas if they don't get at least another 3 feet before then.

i read the same report and believed it... that was my impetus to leave the condo at base of Mt Ellen and drive 1.5 hours to Jay. this time Roemer was right. pretty close to 2 feet everywhere and more. 8) this was a hike up vermonter, and we saw deeper snow on exhibition.

but you're right... these snow reports can be total shyte, esp the ones that k-mart throws down.

nice pic. that's what it was like hiking up to the gondola at steaux on sunday as well. romer must be having a pretty good laugh right now. but even i could call for the big one two dozen times a year and eventually be right. regardless, i stand by my original point that hyping a storm that the pro mets are dismissing is bad form until the storm actually hits. lets focus on what actually hits the ground, not what we want to hit the ground. ah well, i continue to be a very harsh critic of ski area marketing/snow reporting.

Most ski condition reporters go to a special school where they've learned to speak a special language. You just have to know their language. A few translations:

-Inches of snow are measured like dog years. An inch of snow is called "7 inches of fresh powder"

-The phrase "frozen granular" means, of course, solid, nearly unskiable boilerplate.

-"Dress for mid-winter conditions" means "it's so cold today your eyeballs are going to freeze open and your lungs may stop working."

-"Early-season conditions" means "your edges WILL hit rocks and dirt if you ski here today"

Thanks HD, I needed that. I stopped even caring about snow condition reports...best to be close to where you want to ski and just look out the window in the early AM.

Over the past few years, I think all the 'realist' mountains and forecasters seem to have taken the "can't beat 'em join em" approach. Now everyone seems to hype it up.

Trying to find an honest forecast nowadays is like trying to use google to research game cocks.
