YEA!
i was really up in the air about turns this weekend. even up until this morning i was on the fence about heading out for some turns or turning towards the local BC to inspect for blowdowns from the recent big storm that knocked down so much. i declined the nobler pursuit in deference to pure hedonism at jay peak based on the fact that they blew snow and their snow report had indicated a high amount of recent natural snow. 22" since 11/09/05? either it all melted or don't believe the hype or both. but the man made was indeed about 22" deep!!! \

snow making had commenced on upper jet and upper haynes. the hike up the lower jet was fairly painless though i had wished i had brought a second pair of socks as i had anticipated top to bottom on the jet and got my feet a little wet on the way up. no worries since it was crazy warm out! spring skiing weather all the way. my thermal long underwear was complete overkill, i hiked and skiied all day in a long sleeve T only, not once breaking out the fleece or windbreaker. wow.
skinning up upper jet was, um, interesting. the moisture had fallen out and the typical man made hard pack had developed which can be occasionally slippery :? a good work out and got to practice my technique, heh. while skinning haynes on the second run, i completely lost it and ended up slicing part of my finger open when trying to get my skis under me, oops. i learned even in warm weather, it is a good idea to skin with light gloves on.
top of the jet i basked in glorious spring like weather with partly cloudy skis and clear visibility for miles and miles. two quebecois joined me shortly after finishing their skin of haynes. i switched over and clicked in and away i went...
...and it was FABULOUS! the sun had slightly melted down the top layer of snow resulting in EXCELLENT spring like conditions but still HIGHLY edgable. coverage was about 1-2' edge to edge with no bare spots, some whales skiers left. i whooped it up all the way down, enjoying each and every turn for all it was worth.
a group of snowboarders and built a decent size hit where the snow making started at the bottom of upper haynes. only two guys built the jump, but they were joined by a dozen of their new best friends eventually  i skinned up haynes for run number two. after slicing my finger on my skis, i hadn't noticed the blood until i had already started up again. i got my gloves outta my pack while stopped in the middle of the slope and had my skin bag go flying off down haynes a ways. looks like i knew which trail would be my second run!
turns down haynes were excellent but not as good as jet due to less sun. though the whales were less, so i was REALLY able to open up some big turns.
i skied down as low as i could go without skiing grass... and then skied down a little big more on lower haynes  a super fantastic day! i should have done a third run, but the sun was going down and i thought it was getting late. i should wear a watch next time before heading down at only 2P.M.!
pics to follow shortly. my digi cam died on me, so i was forced to take pics on my digi camcorder. i am hoping the quality is okay, i'll find out in a moment...
