Jerry Falwell's Liberty U to get artificial ski slope

I can't imagine that the skiing is all that good. It is sorta silly if you ask me. One thing: does this have to be in the eastern forum? Maybe the we should put in the "bible belt" section.

Sure, it probably sucks (and this probably should have gone into the global warming thread :x)... but for the sake of summer conversation, let's assume that we are, in fact, going into complete, irreversible environmental meltdown and that within (fill in the blank) years, there'll be no more easily accessible ski areas with natural snow.

I wonder what if they could:
-- cost effectively cover an entire mountain/series of peaks with this stuff
-- figure out a way to spray it with enough of that crap to make it slippery enough to ski on (and do it without unsightly snow guns)
-- attact enough people to make it profitable

Before piling on with sarcastic or tangential comments, I would invite someone like q from Great Britain to comment. From what I've read there are several of these facilities in England.

The only comment I remember is that falling on that surface is rather painful.

And yes, it belongs in the Eastern section. It's probably equivalent to any number of Midwestern molehills. Comparisons to those or indoor facilities would be interesting.

Hunter Mountain had a trail off B-Lift in the early 1960s that was covered with ground up plastic. Sometimes you would come across an old doll head that was not completely ground up. It was the land of misfit toys. Anyway this little summer time adventure never really worked out at Hunter.

Many ski areas would stay opened late into April if they had more customers. Given that you got to wonder if their is a market for summertime skiing and snowboarding. Maybe the terrain park features will be enough to draw folks into summertime sliding and riding. Plattekill and other ski resorts do pretty good with their mountain biking in the summer.

this thread brings back fond memories for me. as a sophmore in high school i worked in the evenings midweek at summit sports in hyannis on cape cod. this was 1989 and i was a 100% snowboarder and at the shop we had an artificial ski slope in the back lot that must've been like 40 vert and was steeper at he top than at the bottom and provide some fun turns at the time. folks actually demoed skis and boots on the thing and it did work. i remember being so stoked just to have that thing in smelling distance to the ocean and a couple of tick tacks on skateboard away from a local skate park. summer fun on the cape-ahhhhh!

...I loved Jerry so much;-),
Easy to see the emphasis on its development....the guy had a really tough time rubbing shoulders with people of lesser economic standing outdoors...in the real world. Entrance fees = tax write-offs for those over 100k only... The only night that topped his passing was the night of Richard Nixon's resignation speech...(That! was a great evening).
