Holy melting snow batman, it was hot!! Actually, it was probably the second hottest day that I have ever skied, with temperatures around 80F and the sun blazing. It was even hot having après ski beers at 5:30pm! Oh, yeah, the skiing. Didn't even bother with Skyelark/Bittersweet as it was all about the bumps and Skyelark/Bittersweet looked seriously unski friendly. Superstar had been %$&*$%/ groomed again, except for the headwall and the zippers on the skier's left. They had the race course for the fun slalom set up on the flats for most of the day, which made that section very narrow for those of us that were more interested in skiing than standing in line waiting to run the course!?! The bumps on the headwall were the usual volkswagons, and just got bigger as the day progressed. The rest of the trail bumped up nicely, so the skiing was amazing spring bumps, but man was it hot! The snow was literally melting before your eyes. Comment heard around 2:00pm, "Wow, I stop for a beer break and all of the snow melts!" That was said in response to the observation that in the morning one skied off of the lift and gingerly skied over the entrance to the headwall, whereas by 2:00pm on had to get off of the lift, remove one's skis and walk approximately 20 yards down the headwall in order to reach the snow. Coverage was complete all of the way to the bottom on Superstar, although just above the last pitch it was getting narrow and quite thin. With the temperatures yesterday I imagine that the walk down the headwall just got longer, and that the spot above the last pitch became more precarious. The cooler temperatures this week may slow down the melt, but the damage has been done. A quick check of the K-mart website this morning mentions nothing about the walking required, which I find ridiculous, hence this post. They also still claim that the Skyelark/Bittersweet route is open, which I find hard to believe. And they are charging $39! For that price they should at least be honest about what people are going to find. OK, rant over. Back to Saturday. In a nutshell, another amazing late sping skiing day on Superstar. Did I mention the number of hotties ripping the bumps?

Was an awesome day. Yesterday the walk got longer, but it was cooler. My kids had a blast and they loved the race and the moguls. I was glad they had groomed the trail because the kids were able to have a fighting chance. Some people believe they were grooming it on purpose to make it melt. Rumour on the hill was that next weekend will be the end. About those hotties, were you the one yelling at my wife to take her top off?

When I landed in Hartford April 27, 1990 it was 91 degrees. The next day I skied Tucks and it was around 80 at Pinkham Notch but probably not much over 60 in the Ravine.

I also skied Baldy once when it was 93 in L.A. It was probably around 70 where I was skiing, but riding the lower chair back down a SW facing canyon to the parking lot felt like you were dropping into a furnace.
