Killington VT 10/30/2005 - Closing Day

Definitely the best opening day in memory. I'm sure Kmart would've rather not opened but was sorta shamed into it by the fact everyone knew they had 30"+ of snow and Wildcat beat them to opening. Still, I give them credit for getting virtually the entire K basin open (not that it was tough given the cover). It's pathetic however that they don't have the commitment to keep it going as there's plenty of skiers and snow (a slight thaw is coming but nights are forecasted to be in the freeze zone again midweek). By choosing a lift (ex. Superstar) and adding snowmaking to the huge cover it'd be dead easy but we know how that goes. Barring another unambiguous dump, I bet they'll stick with the previously announced opening of 11/11 (first time they've ever predetermined an open date so far in advance).

Okay, the skiing. Got there at 8am anticipating big crowds and it was reasonable at that point tho I was told they actually started sending people up at 7:30 if not earlier. As stated, virtually the entire basin was open or would be within a coupla hours. The main trails were excellent packed powder with some powder albeit thicker/wetter by the minute with sun and moderate temps sweeping in. Many sweet bump lines had formed. A gorgeous day. Off piste was possible everywhere with the 2 storms worth of snow providing adequate cushion even in the rockiest areas. It was however very wet and heavy and I can't remember having such a "hop 'n turn" workout at an opening so the muscles are a bit sore to say the least! Also the warmer temps were melting the snow clinging to the branches to the point that it was basically raining in the woods! Got wet. Kinda funny to see that the last of the leaves had actually fallen on *top* of the snow.

They were running the K1 gondy, Snowden Poma, North Ridge (nee Glades) triple and that Snowden chair down at the end of the parking lot. Acess to the Superstar area by crossover. Only problem was the Glades triple. It was down at the start of the day apparently due to a fallen tree close by. It started up mid morning and I did some runs off it after a couple of top to bottoms from K peak. When I went to catch a third ride up the Glades however it was stopped, remained so for 5-10 minutes, then we were told it was down (they did run it enough to get the people off it). We had to disperse and some people started to jump the ropes on the adjacent trails to get down. The loss of the Glades chair of course only increased the crowd at the gondy though I've seen worse. Don't know if/when they got it going again. Switched to K1 and tried some of the stuff in/around Ovation and Superstar. Great stuff there but by then it was noonish and I was whipped after almost 4 hours of hopping around so I bailed.

The parking lot was absolutely jammed. Applying a typical ratio of early weekend-to-midweek skiers would have yielded a respectable # of the latter so any arguments about lack of same don't hold. As we know, people are chompin at the bit early season (and I've always laid blame on the customers for not being as eager for generally better snow come spring). I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have people showing up in the coming days just assuming that they're open. Their loss. Anyway, nice to get back out there.

The end of days should be close... I went...

It was the 2nd time I was skiing in october in my life. The first time, I got a few patches of snow at St-Sauveur in 2003. This time, I got Cascade almost without barespots T2B with all of its neighbours in winter conditions. Ok, it's sure that at the end of the day, conditions were getting like advanced spring and there was about no snow left at the base, but what an incredible day we got there. I'm completely broken in 2 this morning at the office... OUCH

Just a little proof that YES I crossed the US border

... on the way up to Catwalk

I didn't think it was going to happen, but they did open. However I think you're bang on with your statement cd. Unfortunately...

Well, a short report here,

This was my first day at Killington... after bitching about it for years like others for the lack of early/late skiing in the season.

Well, I guess I will shut up after having skied some incredible conditions in october there yesterday !

I'm sure saturday was 10x better, but I don't care... sunday was my day and we got an incredible time at the mountain.

I think I tried most of the interesting trail on the north side of the mountain (Superstar, Ovation, Escapade, Cascade, Flume, Downdraft, Double Dipper, Big Dipper, East Fall, Royal Flush and Highline in particular).

I enjoyed quite a lot those trails, especially Cascade who remains my favorite one overall.

I think I may revisit the mountain in the coming years... may be even this year, in late season or even in early season, if I'm not able to get satisfied with 2 little trails open at St-Sauveur in a few weeks, after what I got at the big K last weekend !!

From Montreal, it only took us less than 3h30, driving not too quickly, so it's quite reasonable for a destination I think...

As we were in an Inn (the inn of the 6 mountains) saturday night, we were on the slopes at 8h20 and we left way after 4pm, after a fantastic last run on Cascade.

I enclose here a few pics ! I hope you will enjoy them ;)

Well, actually, we got some difficulties as I was with a guy who is born in France, a girl who doesn't have a driving license and when the guy asked me what was my city of birth, I told without thinking "Laval" while I'm born in Sept-Îles in my very young days......... so they checked all the car and hold us 1h at the border before to let us pass...

Less worst than I planned it....

No, I'm kidding, we didn't get some problems, even though the guy was roughly believing that we were going to ski, in october...

I've always said that Montreal-Killington day trip was worth the drive when you have to choose between MSS and Kmart. Now you know want I was talking about.

BTW, I'm not sure if you remember, but Cascade used to be the early and late season trail when I started making day trip over 20 years ago which was prior to changes like Superstar, K1 gondolas, etc etc and all the things that have been discussion here numerous times.

I don't only remember it...

I also told the story to the other zoneskiers present sunday...

... and I added the fact that you skied down Downdraft Headwall completely on rocks somewhere at the end of may, in the 80s... :D

Ahhh... May 27 1985 or was it the 28? (we were there two days, almost alone and skiing in the rain - see pics in the archives of 2003)

I wasn't alone... my partner at the time (full time BC resident for almost 20 years now) did the same st**** thing.

Ahhh...my poor old Fischer Racing Cut.

Actually, I took a look at those ski this summer for my sand skiing, but the were too bang up.

Hey frankontour graet pics of killington on opening day I was there but forgot the digi cam. I've been riding killington for years and never done catwalk is it worth it? how far is the hike?

Thanks for the good words, Knuckle Dragger !

The hike to Catwalk is not long (less than 5 minutes) and about 100' high above the top of the gondola. The view from there is wonderful and the trail really rocks ! It's a short but steep narrow pitch entering in the snow ghosts and turning to reach Downdraft or Double Dipper.

Personnaly, I really liked it... so I think the little 5 minutes walking is really worth it :)

I have a little video into it (with Eric skiing)... it's not impossible that I post it somewhere, although it's only a 5-10 seconds sequency...
