what a strange 2 dayer...

woke up for a nature call at 3am and it was pouring rain out...oh well, no skiing today....up at 9am figuring nothing to do but kill time till the roads cleared from the massive mess that was apparently :? going on...
stepping out it was 4 inches of slush on the stairs ( the most i have ever seen anywhere ) and misting....snowsource.com had the only places that dodged rain as the stowe/jay/smuggs and bolton quadrangle... driving there would be ridiculous.... we decided to give it a shot across the street at looneyville after seeing the gondola was spining from across the street, although interestingly , the web site was down :-k
reports from other places like killington sounded like a disaster was in the making....on the hill by 10... Gondola was spinning with about 100 people skiing....it looked like they got about 3 inches of snow before the changeover to rain at some point during the night....it was spitting rain till about 11 ...
the skiing was really really good....it was pure wet packed hero mush :D ....i would have slapped the epic label on it except for what happened next....by about 12 the sun was out ,but an erie feeling of coldness was felt and by 130 the temps dropped from what seemed like 35 or so to probably 25 with increasing winds...and that was pretty much the death knell.... i have never seen snow change so fast....it completely s*%t the bed in 15 minutes...it went from wonderful cream cheese mush to rutted waterlogged rutlines....
unbelievable mind bender for sure....from euphoria to lets get the hell out of here in about 3 hours... oh well.... got a good three hours in and probably the best three hours for a long time coming, considering the short and long term outlooks..
they really got soaked for sure...lincoln did not appear to have the damage of other parts of the north country that are sounding like disaster areas....we drove home on 93 at about 3pm and the roads were fine... down to about exit 20 there looked to be some icing on tress but did not see any devestation that is being reported...
i hesitate to say it is going to be a nightmare skiing this weekend anywhere based on the moisture content that it appears most places have only because we did not expect such good turns for the first part of the day today....but common sense tells me that certainly loon and i would think most places are going to be disasters for the next 3 or 4 days...loons base appeared to take a major hit with serious brown spots all over with what looked like no more than 6 inches of base on the 2 and 1/2 open trails/ ways down....( the web site count is baloney FYI)
right now im just happy to have made turns in soft snow for 3 hours, driven home safe, and not lost power at all...i would not ski this weekend ...but that's just me..

good preston smith interview lifted from Kzone .. i put it in the general discussion tab

yo joe!
the morning snow was deluxe fer sure. we get all kinds of hero deluxe round these parts and so many different kinds. with the light non snow precip coming down at cannon, i decided to do a morning skin from the tram base on natural not yet open ski trails 2150 vert up to the summit. beautiful quiet tour in the mist. the turns coming down in 5-6 inches of wendys frosty type untracked snow was hero, floaty and easy all the way back down to the car and back to portsmouth for work. i was up north anyway and got a nice little pre-work workout in on some damn fine wowder. glad you got out.
