what a perfect day to take advantage of a free ticket to loon! my dad and i arrived at 8:30am to a nearly empty parking next to the mountainside rentals building. gove adams base lodge was similiarly vacant. my expectations of a light weekend crowd due to the holiday proved correct with ski on lift lines all day on the kanc quad with only the ticket scanners holding up the line  ski on all day on the double, and ski on past noontime on the northpeak quad with very short waits (~3-4 minutes) before noon. wow. gondi was walk on until 9 and a 4 minute wait at 9:30, rest of the day was unknown. given the short lift lines, there still was quite a bit of traffic... i can't imagine this place on a full on weekend

lets waste no time in getting to the bumps since we know from joegm that loon is all about the bumps! the verified no bull is... loon is amazingly dedicated to the bumps and puts a lot of mountains to shame with the amount of bump coverage, especially considering their resorty image. props to joegm for fighting the good fight and for the management for spotting bump skiers some solid terrain. that said, most of the bumps sucked (IMHO) this afternoon. bumps skiers left on lower flume were firm and scrapped, same for bumps over on lower rumrunner where at least lines were better but less scraped. the short bump pitch under the gondi on picaroon was a cool idea for introducing bumps to the intermediate skier, but again, scraped and firm. bumps under the double lacked good lines and were spread out (i.e. slip slidder formed bumps) so i stayed skiers right under the lift where the snow was softer. triple trouble was a treat with good lines, bumps were on the larger size but still kinda firm but not too bad. definitely the best bumps of the day. TT reminds me a little of mid-hard at cannon with it's twists and unrelenting bumps.

the groomers started of a VERY firm frozen granular that seemed almost scrapped from the get go. perhaps recent NCP at loon? skier traffic took it's toll accross the mountain, but thankfully the sun was out in full force with blue cloudless skys to warm things up gradually. things started getting mashed potato mixed with scraped down low (very odd combo) and staying generally firm and scrapped up top. my overall impression is if people think cannon is an icey expert mountain and they ski loon on the weekend a lot, they outta give cannon a shot! it's definitely no worse than loon for scraping that's for sure. people were saying "best conditions of the season!" they were outta their minds!!!! best weather maybe..... but nay, i've had better weather days too. any ways...

surprise best run of the day was.... mike's way!!! what a tree trail! this is arguably one of the better in bounds tree runs in the white mountains. i'd put it in my top five overall. you drop in, and the sucker just opens up from fox to the gondola... there's great lines any where to the point that not only no run would be the same, but no turn from run to run would be the same. conditions were defintiely thin with stump and rock showing through, but the snow was edgable PP with green coloring from the trees. it was a great run, wish i had time for two. of all places, loon was the last area i expected to find a quality tree run such as this. skidder of angel street was also a pleasant surprise but not in the same league quality wise.

overall.... what a day! incredible views of the presis, bonds, franconias, cannon, etc. blue skies no clouds all day. first day without the ear flaps on the helmet this season. and to top it off, ski on lift lines at loon on a weekend with the entire mountain open. seriously. if loon wasn't so *!$@ing expensive and crowded, i'd likely be there more often, it has a lot to offer.

p.s. the crowd at loon was a freaking fashion show. seriously. the pretty people were out in full force with all the ladies getting decked out in full make up... to go skiing! hello! less is more, btw.....

:D

Dopp/CTEC

i never noticed it before, but loon is loaded with Dopp/CTEC models. my fav two models for comfort and speed (though i do love halls and riblets for feel and character).

i love reading other peoples reports on loon, especially a guy like river who knows what he is talking about... just for perspective.
i v'e been out of the no bull loop for 3 weeks now with comp problems.
re: rivers observations bump specific.
2 weeks ago we had the GM all ready to take down the bumps on flume and rumrunner and re set them.. it was a perfect time , they just got snow.. the lines were getting trashed, as river points out, and it wasn't too warm as to speed up degrading the base...we literally had the GM promise us it was going to begin three weeks ago tonight....then he ran into his ski school director who apparently implored him not to do it, becasue he didn't want to " lose the bumps " for 3 or 4 days while they got skied in again.  talk about a one way shortsighted hypocrite  this is the same ski school director who, three years ago, when we first started pleading for that rumrunner line, gave us no help at all in the lobbying effort....we had a couple of confrontations/negotiations with the guy over the last 2 weeks that , obviously were fruitless. we had to try and maintain some civility as to not blow our in with the GM. i know for a fact the GM was going to dedicate the man hours to doing it becasue i know he is a good guy and has treated us real good and has been honest with us all year... but he was also honest with us when he emailed me and told me that he had to listen to his ski school director  ..we tried to make the point to mr PSIA about the lines really getting trashed , among other points....all were dismissed with that typical PSIA snotty attitude... the result has been, as steve found out today, total junk on flume and marginally better on rum... the erratic lines are manageable when the snow is soft corn....but when it gets hard, as often is the case from march 15th to april 10th or so, it becomes garbage. as steve attested to, flume is crap at this point, and the upper part of rum, at least the first 12 bumps, are useless for trying to use good form.
so steve, while i appreciate the kind words about the lobbying.. the shame is they should be so much better for you guys and would have if this pin head listened to us and re-set them a couple of weeks ago... this guy wouldn't even sign off on rebuilding the kiddie lines under the gondy which are pretty much non existant at this point... as my buddy has grown fond of whining " it ain't easy being a bump skier ". Loon shuts it down on the 17th ... we are at the cat on wed and thurs this week for what looks like epic weather and loon on fri

and another thing;
re steve's assessment:
believe it or not, we've been trying to get them to groom out under the double as it seems to be a waste as the bumps always bite it under there, as steve observed... The gm has confied in us that he gets emails from people complaing about too amny moguls...   so this would be another way to appease those pansies...the other maddening thing they do is they groom out the bottom of triple trouble where it flattens out...it's probably the most isolated in bounds run at loon and is actually pretty peaceful, which is rare thing at loon... it would be another killer area of medium pitched bumps and it would not take away any flat terrain as everyone who goes in there in the first place knows what they are getting into and, as steve pointed out, it usually has the best snow on the hill as the traffic is the least because of the drop in fear factor for the typical loony toon... it's amazing to us that they don't groom out under the doulbe as it is a classic loony toon lovers delight.. kinda steep where one could really feel like scot schmidt letting it rip  ....leaving it alone as they do, just turns it to junk 95% of the time...and yeah, loon is definitely a major fashion catwalk on the weekends.... can anyone explain to me why chicks will not put on hats when it is 3 degrees out? :?

i'll take a stab at this one. .....cause guys like you are looking at them.
that wasn't a complaint i don't think. just a concern, right?
CAUTION: it's the "cougars" that you don't want to make eye contact with.
if you find yourself in this situation. stop. look away. (get a to-go cup)
and back away very slowly. keep going until they are out of site.
then run like he11.

i noticed this and it boggled me. what could have been some nice small and easy bumps to let it rip turned into a boring run out. the flat section of triple trouble is a complete and total waste and a mind boggler.

thanks for the background on the bumps. that's too bad a ski school director can't realize that loosing the bumps for a few days is better in the long run for instructing people on them. i thought it was funny they had those big signs stating the obvious.... BUMPS! before each set, lol.

Great to hear you got to Loon, Steve. I had a great time ealier this month for four back-to-back days.

They groomed the lower section on TT? That's odd. As joe points out, you need to conquer the upper portion first anyway, so why not leave the lower alone. I didnt see that TT had been groomed when I was there. I was under the impression that it was just flat cuz people straightline out. TT is Loon's best run with consistent snow and a nice layout. A great run:

Did anyone notice that the choke point on TT is much wider this year? They must have cleared part of it which is unfortunate as that was one of the most interesting sections. I skied Mike's Way for the first time this season. I'm not a big tree skier, but it was a certainly a great run too. This was the only pic I got while there:

regarding TT, there were no obvious signs of grooming at the end of the trail such as courdoroy lines, but it isn't that flat that bumps wouldn't form after a snow storm. the bumps just stop suddenly without petering out and the trail is flat with some pitch. it looks like they might groom it out after a storm which flattens it then let it be unless it snows again. i could be wrong, but the way the bumps stopped suddenly despite there still being ample pitch for bumps forming after a snow fall indicated to me that they had a cut off point where a groomer seemed to have knocked things down. like i said, i could be wrong but it definitely didn't seem natural.

I don't konw. I don't think it would make any sense for them to run a groomer up to the end of the steep section. My guess is that folks bomb that stretch after they finish the steep section. Most people I've skied with do. I tend to like to turn a lot regardless of pitch so i'm not one of them and typically find some nice snow to turn in on the lower portionof TT along the sides. It would be interesting to know for sure, and if yes, what the rationale for grooming that stretch would be...

First post. This looks like a great community--glad to be here!

Does anyone know how conditions in Loon are now (or more precisely, what they might be like this coming weekend)? I'm thinking about going up on Saturday, but I'm wondering how things are after the rains.

Has anyone been to Loon since it rained?

Edit: The website sounds very optimistic, listing 49/50 trails open and a base of 25-125", but I don't know whether to believe that or not.

they had a good base with even the glades skiing well (thin cover though). i doubt you'll see any bare spots on the main trails. it takes more than a day of rain to wash that much snow away and they didn't get hit too bad up north from what the latest cannon report is saying...
