Monterosa Ski (Gressoney / Alagna, Italy): April 4, 2025

Under your advisement, we’ll be there in February. I am presently holding flights in and out of Zurich, but I’m considering a change to Milano which would an allow a stop over in Alagna. More driving but more optionality. Does this make sense?
 
No Alagna is the far eastern base with the most tedious mountain road. Base in Grosseney, more central and just as close to the Indren tram.

I think it could be fine.

Both Alagna and Gressoney are roughly 2 hours from Milan Malpensa.

Gressoney would always be my prefered base since you are in the middle valley with best access to anywhere in Monterosa, and access to the Aosta Valley/Italy, Verbier and Chamonix. Also, Gressoney has tree-skiing, low elevation lifts.

However, Milan was my gateway airport when I went to Andermatt for Freeride Days. And Alagna is actually closer to Andermatt (3.5 hours).

The drive up the valley to Gressoney has a few one-lane sections. I doubt Alagna could be too much worse.

Yes, I stayed in Staffal last January and agree it’s perhaps the best base for Monterosa. But I would like to overnight in Alagna, and do a bit of house shopping, if only to kill a dream once and for all. Regarding Andermatt, would you recommend round tripping from either Milan or Zurich? If so, which access point is most convenient? Alternatively, arrive in city A and fly out of city B with stop at Monterosa to start or finish the trip?

For experts, I classify Monterosa in the same category as Taos, NM; Sun Valley, ID; The Dolomites; Chile; and Argentina, maybe New Zealand; don't pre-book. Their snowfall is simply either low or unreliable.

Frankly, I have not seen Monterosa have a great season this decade - often lackluster until March.

No, drop fees are exorbitantly high returning to a different country. Could be $500-1000 USD. I was quoted $5k for a Switzerland drop (Italy origination) during COVID shutdown while trip in process.


If I had to guess how a trip might go:
  • If Andermatt is good, then likely Engelberg will be good. Tony possibly might know the correlation. And if there has been a decent NW or N Flow, likely some of the following will be good: East - St. Anton, Davos, Montafon, etc. Or West/SW - Verbier, Zinal/Grimentz, Chamonix, etc.
  • If Monterosa is good, then likely Zermatt/Cervinia got hammered, maybe La Thuile/Courmayeur, Via Lattea, and possibly St. Moritz and the Dolomites. Andermatt could still be OK, but Engelberg meh.

It would be an exceptional year if ski resorts on the North and South sides of the Alps are doing well by February 1st.



Some other Andermatt/Gemsstock advice:
  • One needs a guide for a full day with decent weather to learn how to ski the various exposures and entrances. Very little is line of sight except the two faces where pistes are carved.
  • Vertical expectations. It's not high-speed laps - instead, 2 trams and a long runout (10- 40 min / possible bus/cab/train). There is something called the Swedish or Norway or Scandi Traverse that avoids the lower tram/runout, and speeds up laps, but I don't know where you can catch it.

Yes it seems clear that La Thuile, Courmayeur and Cervinia can get snow from the west but Monterosa needs to get snow from the Mediterranean.

Interestingly, snow forecasters note that when Mediterranean storms draw in moisture not just from the south, but also from the southeast or east, Alagna particularly benefits. The wePowder book and other sources indicate that Alagna receives almost 1.5 to 2 times the snowfall of Champoluc, which is obstructed from this moisture pattern.

This type of storm also brings moisture to the Via Lattea ski areas.

In summary, the Aosta Valley features an incredible variety of microclimates.iety of microclimates.

The Alps are governed by a handful of recurring synoptic weather patterns rather than random storms. Once you understand these patterns, you can predict which resorts will receive exceptional snowfall while others are sunny under a foehn wind.

What this means for a powder chaser


Based on the resorts you’ve discussed for extended European ski trips, they complement each other exceptionally well:


  • Atlantic storms (NW/W): Base yourself in Chamonix, Verbier, or Andermatt.
  • Mediterranean/Genoa Low storms: Move to Monterosa or Cervinia/Zermatt.
  • Southern Adriatic storms: Head to Madonna di Campiglio.

This is exactly why experienced European powder chasers often drive rather than remain at a single resort. A storm that delivers over a meter to Monterosa may leave Verbier with only a few centimeters, while a classic northwest Stau can bury Chamonix and Andermatt as Cervinia sits under sunshine and foehn winds. Understanding these storm tracks is often more valuable than simply choosing the snowiest resort on average.
 
Seems like crap above/delete. Northern Stau is a common track and is not represented. What are the sources?

The issue: how common are these storm tracks? See the table below. It seems accurate enough to me. Source: MeteoSwiss.

I bet you will have a below-average February 1st experience in Monterosa and will likely spend more time in Andermatt (or Engelberg, Verbier, Chamonix).
Why? The storm tracks that favor Monterosa are uncommon, but if they do occur: jackpot! WePowder said the banner seasons are when one of these unicorn storms occurs in fall/early winter, creating a 1-2 meter base by December.

However, I will bet on green. Since post-COVID travel in 2023, I have planned 3 trips to meet UK-based friends around late January/early February: 2x to Engelberg (plus Andermatt) and 1x Courmayeur (plus Chamonix/Mont Blanc). Engelberg especially can pull moisture from even a small front.

The Tarantaise is also favored by the green box storm patterns. Val d'Isere gets Retour d'Est in addition.

West Stau must be the favored pattern for Alpe d'Huez, Deux Alps, La Grave, with Southwest Flow being decent too.

Maurienne Valley is in between the two regions above, with Val Cenis and Bonneval sur Arc exposed to Retour d'Est.
 
I'm quite confident that Nord Stau is far more common than either South or Retour d'Est. There is a reason the Arlberg is one of the snowiest regions in the Alps. No way is it 10-15% and a South is 10-15%.

In general the above gives a framework to think about it and many of the specifics aren't wrong, but I think the frequency percentages are seriously wrong, based on my amateur watching over and visiting over 25 years.
Without having TonyC level data, to my eye, Cham, Engelberg, Andermatt, and the Arlberg are routinely the snowiest, with the various French resorts (Val d'Isere, Val Thorens, etc) having more variability between seasons, but at least having good elevation in today's warming world which is becoming more and more key in the Alps. Anything that rely's on the South is a serious crap shoot. That's the unfortunate reason why I have never been to the Monterosa. Been on my list for a long time...

My son's training camp in Saas Fee was just cancelled as the glacier is closing on Monday. They were scheduled for the last 2 weeks of Aug.
 
I also 2nd the advice to not try and drop a car, especially in another country. It's usually prohibitively expensive.

We are flying into and out of Zurich. Direct flight from LAX and can get anywhere in less than 4.5 to 5hrs which is our normal Mammoth drive anyway. When I looked at Geneva, the added layover+ flying time was slower than just getting in the car and driving after the direct flight.

Note that the Northwest Stau, the most common pattern, also hits the Arlberg in full force. The classic Nordstau storms of January 2019 buried everything in Austria and eastern Switzerland with diminishing effect as you moved farther west. Northwest storms come off the Atlantic and can have a wide range of rain/snow lines. The Nordstaus come from due north and are cold with rain/snow line well below even the lowest base elevations in Austria.

The Nordstau impact is usually over a wide range of ski areas. It's a direct orographic lift hit on east/west oriented mountains. We get much more of this in North America with the north/south orientation of Sierra, Wasatch, Tetons, etc. combined with more common storms moving west to east.

The southern storms can be very localized even if frequency is similar. Several of them last year were confined to the Maritime/SW Alps and didn't even reach Aosta.

With my ties to Delta/SkyTeam I have no nonstop option to Alps ski gateways from LAX. Everything goes through AMS or CDG. I assume Swissair (Star Alliance) is the only nonstop option to Zurich.
