mount washington ski train

I know there was alot of discussion about it on here last spring. Was just looking at the cog website and noticed that they're planning on running it this season. I didn't realize it was gonna happen so soon. I know there was alot of opposition to the idea. I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on especially the evironmental impact of running the cog all winter. Also noticed there planning on doing some snow making near the base. Salida? everyone?

To be honest, the skiing that they are offereing is hardly skiing at all. It is pretty much a straight slope on the bottom third of the tracks. Surely, they will charge an astronomical amount to ski roughly a blue square trail for 1,000 vertical feet at most. And to be completely honest, the cog is a dinosaur, it takes forever to ride, I don't know many people who will want to sit in a noisy, cold (sub zero temps), dirty, smelly train to ski one straight trail.

Yes, its a novelty, but I doubt it will be very successful. Any other thoughts?

i'm thinking this will be a big draw for the mount washington hotel and it's winter clientel. a lot of these folks will really dig this type of novelty i'm sure. ski a few turns over at BW and take a novelty train ride once or twice to say "i skied mount washington"

i haven't heard about the rates, but i'm sure it's gonna be much higher than the already rediculous rates they charge people in the summer for a two way trip. i don't think any families or hard core skiers are gonna go for this. the cog skiing option is probably gonna be marketed to people considering the mouth washington hotel and other well to do types that can afford to splurge on novelty that lacks much substance.

though given the low up hill capacity of the cog, i would guess this might be a fun ride if freshies were available. but there are so many better options in that neck of the woods i don't know how most skiers could justify it.

The site says uphill campacity is 350/ hour. Rates are Full-day $59
Single Ride $25 (round trip or one way to access ski trails).

The Clog Ski Train makes me want to vomit lumps of coal.I hope its goes bankrupt.
This year it's one run with limited snowmaking. In the next few years it will be a proposal for expanded snowmaking and the cutting of new trails.Just watch.
Mount Washington is losing it's wild side. It's being tamed for tourists.
I want my kid and his kids kids to enjoy the SAME mountain I grew up with.Wild!Something to be respected. Not some amusement park attraction complete with t shirts, bumper stickers and shot glasses.
I want to find moose, bear and wild birds. Not plastic bags and souvigneers(sp?).
I really worry about the future of Mount Washington.

personally, i don't know a whole lot about this topic.....other than following the discussion from last spring, but i must say that somebody is just not asking one of the most important questions. do the benefits exceed the costs? it's a no brainer i believe. NO!
also, so true about what NHPH said,

Mount Washington is losing it's wild side. It's being tamed for tourists.

also what riverc0il said,

the cog skiing option is probably gonna be marketed to people considering the mount washington hotel and other well to do types that can afford to splurge on novelty that lacks much substance.

that pretty much sums it up in a nutshell.

i think we all feel the same way on this topic. we're all preaching to the choir, but feel free to voice your opinion.
