Mt Baldy, CA - 3-25-06

Started around 10:00.

Crust / Heavy stuff in the morning and late afternoon; softer stuff approaching slush in the mid afternoon.

Mostly skied Skyline and Emile's on chair 3 early on. Both had plenty of
coverage; the snow on Skyline was a better - a little softer and less crusty.

After the first two hundered feet or so of Skyline there are some visible
rocks but above and below it's great. I probably spent the most time on that run because of the snow. The snow in the trees was heavy snowball snow - not too crusty just thick and heavy. Adding a little hop to the turns did the trick.

As the day warmed up it all got better.

There are definitely rocks and stumps but they are all visible and easily
avoidable, and the snow is so packed that there was really not much danger of unexpected obstacles. I skied for about 5 hours and did no damage to my bases - something I cannot say for the previous five weekends. There should be plenty of snow Sunday 3-26.

South Bowl was open so I had to give it a go. Nice being there again -- the
snow is wet and heavy everywhere, and crusty in places, but definitely skiable. There was enough snow for the traverse back to the chair.

Chair 4 was open but there was not enough snow for the tree runs.

All in all a good day. No crowds to speak of, and the weather was excellent.

There is enough snow to ski the steeps. It will not last much longer but
tomorrow will be a good day for anyone that goes up and wants to ski Skyine.

Something new in the lodge -- 3 for $5.50 Organic Tacos. They were a nice change from the Baldy Burgers. Bean and Cheese or Turkey / Potato.

I accidentally checked "hardpack" as the surface in the report. There's no way to edit it. There actually was some hardpack but a more accurate description would be heavy in the morning with some crust, a lot softer between 10:00 and 2:00, heavy in the trees all day.

The main thing is that there is plenty of snow and the obstacles are visible enough to have a great day on Sunday.

nice TR ... looks to be better coverage than i thought after a few warm days.... might head up wed or thurs if we get 1 ft or more...

Thanks for the report. I may go up Wednesday, too, depending on how much and how light this next dump is (and whether or not I dare take another day off from work!). Sounds like it should be nice by the end of the storm.

I usually always wear a large green fanny pack while skiing. Say hi if you see me up there. (My name is Roy. )

I managed to swing a day off from work so I'll be heading up there in the morning. I'm usually in a black shell / black helmet. I'll shout hello if I see you up there. My name is Brian.

I just called (5:55 PM PST) and they said there's a rain/snow mix in the parking lot and snowing like crazy at the top.

I keep checking the temp and it has been hovering around 32 all day, so I imagine that's wet snow at the top, but hopefully as it cools down tonight it will continue to come down and with any luck it will be nice and dry.

yeah, i also called at 4 pm today.. they said rain snow mix at the notch,..but the notch has been around freezing thru the whole event.. so wonder if they are smokin crack again.. Thunder couls be nice..albeit a bit thick.. i guess the AM report is the call...

I'll be up if they claim 12" or more..

blue helmet tan pants, tan jacket.. answers to "vodka"..

I thought it was a frappuccino? I've blown my lift tix wad, so on Thursday, it's all about fantabulous Mt. High, where my little plastic piece of freedom (pass) is still good. Hopefully they get enough to reopen East. It's snowing on the wrightwood page cam.

I'll be there, too on Wednesday.

Black pants, Dakine pack with strip of green plaid flying from it. Answers to 'Jonathan'.

LOL yeah that works too...

actually, I think I am going to sleep in tomorrow.. this storm was just too warm and blew thru tonight too fast.. thunder could be nice tomorrow, but i think sleeping in will be nicer. Esepcially since i had 4 maritni's tonight..

lemme know if you go to Mtn high thurs.. , i might go too.. But i doubt East will open.. would like to have 4 days on my pass this year though.. slight chance i coudl go to Mammoth, but tomorrow is goign to be THE day at Mammoth.. ..

I'll put a plug in for myself-

Grey North Face jacket, black pants, often called 'Nick'.

I, too, will also answer to 'Vodka'...

I'm thinking about Thursday for Baldy. I just hope the snowline held below the notch and the snow isn't too wet or ice pellety. If someone goes up tomorrow, a full report would be appreciated, thanks.

I wasn't able to make it up there today after all, although I'm kind of wishing I could have for a few hours in the morning. O'well. I'm wondering if the fresh snow was heavy or light. Looking forward to any reports, even if it confirms that I missed an excellent morning.

Can't imagine it being light, even for here.

Sno, I am wavering on going to High. Wet and not enough to reopen East. It appears I may have already boarded my last day - my wife is due with twins soon. If so, I ended it appropriately - mostly powder 4 days straight at High East > Baldy > Mammoth (2x) 3/12-15.
