Mt. Waterman Returns... 1-07-11 Opening Day

Well, I headed up to old Mt Waterman to partake in Opening Day 2011 and what a mighty fine day it was. I figured it would be a worthy endeavor to support the place, enjoy a nice drive in the mountains and there was also a possibility of fresh tracks on an uncrowded mountain. It has been a few days since the last storm rolled through, however in my experience Waterman will hold the snow quite well for days and indeed, this was the case. The snow was great, the skiing was fantastic, the weather was bluebird sunny and mild. And all this with no crowds. Waterman's base is a bit on the low side but there was more than adequate coverage , in fact i ended up ditching my rock board for my regular powder board after a few runs. It was basically pick your line all-you-can-eat for for the whole day . The snow was soft to around 12"-14" , light but firm where you would sink in 3"-4". The snow did start to get thicker toward the later part of the day. Some clouds rolled in around 1p.m. and brought a few snow flurries and then rolled back out again. I ended up doing lot of fringe runs along both sides and then up top when they got 3 open. Backside is doable and there were a number of participants for that, but it looks like the base is shallow over there. I wouldn't of minded doing that but i didn't want to sweat a ride, as traffic was very sparse. There was plenty to be had in more accessible areas. Anyway here are few pix. No good action shots today as i was solo... several buddies were last minute no go's.. i guess all the powder you can ski with no liftlines or crowds doesn't appeal to some people, go figure.

nice report, thanks for sharing.

fyi, Angeles Crest Hwy-2 is still closed from the bottom in La Canada, so you have to come up via 210 fwy- Sunland Blvd- Oro Vista- Big Tujunga Cyn Rd- Upper Big Tujunga Cyn Rd- to Hwy 2. it's probably 30-45 min longer, but not that bad. Hwy 2 is closed for the winter from the East (Wrightwood side).
