Just in case you didn't see it elsewhere in FTO today, we've got a new feature story & video on Magic Mountain. As always, your feedback is welcome.

This is just the beginning of a whole slew of new resort features coming to FTO over the next couple of months, just in time to feed the pre-sliding jones. Look for Moonlight Basin, MT (including video); Sutton, QC; Bear Creek, VT; Red Mountain, BC; Alta, UT; Snowbird, UT; Deer Valley, UT; Park City Mountain, UT; Middlebury College Snow Bowl, VT; Whitewater, BC; Hickory Ski Center, NY; and others! Stay tuned...

I know there's a certain amount of facetiousness in your post, Geoff (isn't there always?), but my on-mountain dining experiences from that visit were limited to one (elaborate) lunch in the Royal Street Café. If you'd like to backchannel to me any other feedback on dining at DV, feel free.

In spite of the scratchy conditions, nice vid!

Wish I could say the same about the soundtrack...

Oh, before you bother...I know that the soundtrack is lame.

You try finding something with a mid- to fast-tempo 4/4 beat that uses the word "magic" repeatedly! And I'm proud to say that I didn't find that in my own personal repertoire -- that was the iTunes search function to the rescue. A better question might be, "Why in the world would they have that?!"

Don't know if you've ever seen it on the trail map/brochure, but I remember it containing a few lines of extremely lame poetry about the ski area... something to the effect of:

Come dance with the mountain
Come sing with the wind

Always wondered if they had music written to it.

Regardless, Magic rules. 2002-03 was fantastic... didn't even bother to go last season. Hope it snows more this year.

On front channel:

Deer Valley review, the Food Network version:

The Seafood Buffet (dinner) at the Snow Park Lodge is one of the best spreads in Utah. Their Chilean Sea Bass recipe got featured in Gourmet Magazine (since taken off the buffet since that fish is overfished and no longer politically correct). It's somewhat expensive ($50) but all you can eat gourmet food isn't something you see very often.

The Mariposa (dinner) in the Silver Lake Lodge has really high end New American and game, excellent service, and an immense wine list. It's similarly expensive but you get big city dining without most of the stuffiness of a high end restaurant.

In Park City, I like Chez Betty in the Copper Bottom Inn a half-dozen blocks from all the busy Main Street touron places. Traditional American menu and top quality food & service. The Wasatch Brew Pub usually has good stews on the specials board and is my favorite casual bite to eat place. The Sushi in Park City is lousy. The one good place, Ichban, moved to an Abby in Salt Lake City. I usually drive down when I'm in Park City. Market Street Broiler on the east side of Salt Lake City by the Univ of Utah is good, too. It's a decco/bistro decor seafood/grill place.

The Snow Park Lodge at the very bottom is the better place to do Deer Valet cafeteria lunch. The Silver Lake Lodge farther up the hill is much more crowded. Both have identical selections. I'm partial to their soups and chilis. Big flavor and a good value. Superb salad bar. Creative hot entrees. Their desserts are also amazing. Their cherry pie and german chocolate cake both rock.

The Stein Ericsson Lodge has a great Sunday brunch. I'm boycotting the place after they served me an awful meal with awful service for dinner a few years ago. The highlight of the meal was when the waiter dumped a bottle of red wine on me. They charged me for the wine, too.

Deer Valet skiing review:
Go there on a powder day. Get the expert's only trail map. Ski all the on-the-map trees. My personal favorites are Ontario Bowl and the trees to skier's left of the Mayflower chair. The creek bed to skier's right of the Wasatch quad with the cabin in it is also a fun exploration. It ain't oh-my-gosh challenging but you'll have a most entertaining day. The skiing surface tends to be better on the ungroomed stuff and trees off the fixed grip Mayflower and Sultan triples. I usually avoid Empire completely on powder days since the high speed quad puts so many people up there and it's usually pretty flat light.

Marc - Any chance you could put videos up as MPGs as well? I never use Real Player.
MPGs are huge -- that RP movie is 13.2 Mb, and an MPG of equivalent quality would run around double that, at least, probably more like triple that. RP also provides us with three additional advantages:

1. We can stream it to allow broadband users to view it nearly instantaneously. You can't stream MPG or AVI (or QuickTime for that matter).

2. Real movies are platform-independent. Windoze, Mac, Unix, Linux...they're all covered.

3. Our previous movies are all formatted in Real Player, so we can allow users who choose to do so to sit down and watch them all in one sitting, one after the other.

Okay. Okay. You convinced me. I'll download RP...

A word of advice: watch its attempt to hijack your file type preferences. You'll be presented with a window on installation to choose the file types to be associated with RP. Click on the "advanced" button and be sure to uncheck any associations to file types that you already are happy with certain players already installed on your machine.

Thanks for the installation advice, Marc. That video is awesome and well worth the time to download and install RP. Looks like Magic has some great terrain. Anyway, I really enjoyed it (except for the Flock of Seagulls soundtrack  ) and started a thread about it in our forums.

Thanks, Greg. You've saved me the quandry of mentioning it over there myself.

And check out the one added last night from Moonlight Basin -- better skiing, and a much better soundtrack.

loving that video! i was jumping along in my seat to the bumps. such a beautiful thing. magic was rather scratchy last year due to not much snow, looks like the video crew hit up magic on a decent day considering... hopefully this year will provide a real harvest for magic. it unfortunately still is one of new england's best kept secrets despite us magic lovers never shutting up about the place.

Hey AlpineZone,

If you don't want to use RealPlayer try downloading "MediaPlayer Classic" (if you use Windows that is), it supports RealPlayer files without all the annoying ads and etc.... I'd definitely say its worth downloading
