Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

I'm copying my recent comment from the western thread as it may get more informed response here.
Snow on groomers was something close to corn snow today at Blue Mountain, Ontario. Its been cycling above freezing daytime and below freezing nights for most of the last week.

Drove up to Montreal today for my flight tomorrow to Calgary. Just a small amount of snow along the side of the highway in the far northern stretch of the Adirondack’s. But looked to be more snow on the higher peaks. No snow on the ground in Montreal.

A Ski Diva friend who has a place at Sunday River expects to have a good time skiing today, March 22.

Current trail percentages in Vermont reflect the recent blowtorch warmth and rain. Will be interesting to see how deep into spring that Killington and Jay Peak go.

Where's Le Barbu (@Patrick)?

Lol. Early closing for Killington. The Superstar Glacier formed a crevasse and is moving down the mountain. :(:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

At least snowfields - like Timberline Lodge - don't move, likely due to south-facing yearly melt and not being very steep.

Switching to Canyon Quad with no snow base for late season.

No one gets a break from Winter 2025/26 insanity:

As of April 1, 2026, Killington Resort reported a significant 8–10 foot deep crevasse forming on the "Superstar Glacier" due to heavy rainfall and extreme snowpack depths exceeding 30 feet. The Superstar trail and lift are closed until further notice for safety, with potential for continued closures as mountain operations monitor the instability.

Key Details on the 2026 Crevasse Incident:

  • Location: Superstar trail, a major late-season run known for its high-volume man-made snow.
  • Cause: Water saturation from heavy rain combined with a 30+ foot deep, man-made snowpack created structural instability, leading to the crack formation around 1:00 a.m..
  • Status: The crevasse is 8–10 feet deep, with reported ongoing movement and structural concerns.
  • Operation Impact: The Superstar Express Quad is closed, and the resort is evaluating shifting remaining spring skiing to the Canyon Quad area.

This happened to us at Alyeska in 2015 (pre-Valdez warmup).

Its North Face developed a similar crevasse (about 10 ft) near the upper Tram Terminal which closed that terrain down.

It was the most insane powder day (12" new on top) but lifts did not open until 11 am in April!

Note the date. This was a bad April Fools joke.

The Black Mountain April Fool's definitely was believed for a while by some people. Apparently there was more than one story related to Mad River Glen in VT. Took me a few paragraphs to start laughing at Stuart's story.
