I think the beginning of the end was when Kilington screwed up that free 52 page annual brochure which was around 1987.

Isn't that right around when they got rid of the topographic trail map?

Geez, you're right. There musta' been something in the water right around then. That map was awesome and could keep one busy for hours.

I think the real nail in the coffin came when the ASS - ooops, I mean ASC - came in and for one of their marketing stunts, they came up with "Nivis". Nivis was this mascot that they came up with that was half Puma and half Polar Bear. They even had a costume for him that this poor employee had to wear that only had an vest on him - that's right, only a vest which meant he was BOTTOMLESS. Fortunately, he was not anatomically correct as I woulda' been scarred for life at the sight of that.

Even I remember that topo ski map, and thinking that was a good idea and why didn't other ski areas do that. I probably got it on my October 1988 ski morning on Upper Cascade.

Another comment on ski maps is that the length and vertical of the lifts used to be published on nearly all maps, and now it's more like half to 2/3. This is useful not just for numbers freaks like myself, but that one can use the ratio of length to vertical of the lifts to get a true picture of steepness. We all know that trail ratings are virtually useless for that purpose.

Killington should be Exhibit A in business schools someday of Reverse Synergy.
