They just informed me that the cost is going up from 31 to 50$....nope i cancelled...i can understand the GFS and ECMWF just fine for free

An OpenSnow subscription for $50/year for a single recreational skier is high given the benefits.

I share an OpenSnow Group Plan with my brother and another friend. Generally, I modify accounts: North America and Europe/Japan. And switch one account to South America, Australia, and NZ. I set thresholds for snow over 6 inches for the mountains I might ski during the year, and get forecasts.

However, I really only derive benefits while on a ski road trip or safari/safari or when deciding on a short-notice ski trip, like to Tahoe. Some West Coast locations can be last-minute decisions due to airline competition, such as Seattle, Portland, Spokane, SLC, Denver, and occasionally others (Boise, and some more remote locations using miles (Jackson, Aspen, etc.)

I suggest that people set up a Group Account and use Venmo or Cash App to send pro rata shares, bringing it in line with its value - like $12/year.

Wow. Got lucky. I've never had a subscription before because I thought that even $30 was far too high. But they ran a 48hr sale of half price somewhere in the middle of summer so I begrudgingly bought one for this season at $15.

Might drop it like a hot rock by next summer when they want me to renew though.

Found the timing of the change. Renewals after Nov. 1 will automatically be upgraded.

Went hunting for info because a friend I asked about sharing in a Group has a renewal date in October. So her renewal notice wasn't for $49.99. My renewal was during the summer, so was the same amount as the previous summer.

I don't think it's that difficult to round up a group to share. Admittedly OpenSnow has become a must have for me due to facilitating/cross checking my in-season progress reports.

Base Family is $71.99 until Dec. 2 instead of $89.99. Premium Family is $143.99 instead of $179.99, or $36 each for the next year for a new account covering 4 email addresses.

I'll be perfectly happy continuing with Base when the renewal comes up next summer. Won't have to be distracted by AI Overviews.

I use the national weather service local forecasts for how to dress in the immediate next few days. The one or two destination trips per winter are preplanned, so no backing out if conditions aren't ideal. Usually pick prime season to travel so not likely to encounter disastrous situation.

My OpenSnow situation yesterday is resolved. The individual and group subscriptions had different e-mail addresses. The individual one expired and needed to be deleted.

I don't use OpenSnow for skiing in NC/VA/WV. Between knowing the micro-climates well and SkiSoutheast reporting there is no need.

As for trips to big mountains out west, I follow my destinations for curiosity only. Sometimes I follow a destination because I know someone who has plans to head in that direction during mid-season.

Have also found that posting about weather at a particular resort makes it more likely that someone who is local or plans to ski there on the same date(s) might notice. I usually am with a small crew for ski trips. I don't need company on the slopes all the time, but am always interested in meeting potential ski buddies. That's one reason I joined online ski forums in the first place.

I am keeping my group on the base plan. The only feature I'll miss is the forecast range graphs, which have been nice for putting point forecasts in context. I'd much rather have that than a single-value forecast at 15 days.

The global storm forecast was nice, but if I feel like looking at models I'd rather do that on Tropical Tidbits (or similar sites) where you can see more than just the ECMWF.

The switch has been flipped, Premium features are no longer set for Free Preview as of Nov. 27, 2025. Plenty of places with a note about upgrading.

Forecast graphs remain available at "My Location," meaning you could see them when getting ready to ski at a mountain on the OpenSnow list.

I have the basic plan, and like some others, got it on a promotion. I would never renew at the price point its at now, however as a benefit for my other weather forecasting gig for McCall, I get it for free (not through Opensnow).

fwiw... it's nice to see someone at Opensnow finally admit that their model/s overforecast snowfall for brundage... something I've noticed/bellyached about for the 6 years I've lived here.

in yesterday's Idaho Snow post:

"A word of caution about the OpenSnow forecast for Brundage and something I have noticed quite a bit. Models, for some reason, over-forecast snowfall at Brundage significantly."

But in my opinion doesn't matter.

Yea the amounts are probably way high.

But it helps me decide who to watch and ultimately where to ski.

IMO many of the models do this too. (NAM, GFS) Estimate huge totals, but you can still use them to decide where to go. Isn't that what matters?

this where we disagree... the model tend to under due the mountain qpf...Also you can't just click on the total qpf map and use that number. I feel Open Snows model is purposely verbose to generate clicks and views...
