Oregon Skiing?

After a rough couple of months my wife and I are finally able to get away for a western ski trip. We aim to leave next weekend. We are strongly considering a trip into Oregon ski country, as the snow depths look very encouraging. But I am slightly nervous of a meltdown like last year. It is also a region that we have little experience with--other than a few days in May at Bachelor and Timberline (ref. avatar).

So, are the snow conditions really are as good as they look? It seems to me that the interesting areas for us to ski are Bachelor and Mt. Hood Meadows. Are there any others?

Thanks!
Jeff

Those are the best two, in that order. Hit Meadows midweek, as its weekend crowds and traffic are excessive. Bachelor is generally free of lines. Some smaller areas like Hoodoo and Williamette Pass have good terrain reputations, though I have not skied them. Elevations might be lower too, so a big year like this one is the right time to try them out if you're interested.

Also highly recommended is Mt. Bailey cat skiing at Diamond Lake, about 2 hours south of Bend. I have been there and terrain is outstanding, certainly the best for cat skiing in the U.S.

We have a saying here: "Every day is a powder day at Mt Bachelor". Certainly not completely true, but close this year. You may get some mist and rain occasionally but it's short lived and colder snow usually follows. The La Nina pattern is very favorable for our area so I think you'll have a great trip. It's supposed to be clear all next week, after a 2 footer tomorrow. I bet she (La Nina) kicks back in just when you get here.
I totally agree with Tony, Bachelor and Mt Bailey are the best in the state. The Hood areas are crowded and have heavier snow. Hit Meadows on the way to Central Oregon. If you're up for some challenging terrain go to Bailey for the day. It's $250 and a hoot! We went there last Thursday, five guys and two guides, Oz and Todd. Too bad it snowed 6-8" during the day as it ruined the views of Crater Lake National Park. Check out these pics: http://www.oneday.com/bailey.htm
ps: I'm the short handsome guy with the green pants.
