If the subject didn't make since it will. Anyways I've posted here before awhile back and well here I am again. I really really need to ride this weekend and am on the search for snow patchs. Anything rideable would be great of course longer and deeper the better .I went to bellayre(wow the spelling is way off) the last day they where open and they had some deep base in places. Also I think maybe hawkeye at gore might be do able? If anyones local mountain has a "patch" fill me in.

Thanks Luke

I thought Eisenhower at Hunter would still look good, but looking at the may 20 pic, it looks like it's mostly gone. (although it's tough to see if it's going down lower than what we see).

http://www.huntermtn.com/images/daily/05-20-04.jpg

Last year on may 27 (or so), there was still quite enough snow to worth the hike.

If this trail doesn't have snow anymore, I fear that you will have some difficulties to find some great patches in your area... sorry

There is still Tuckerman Ravine or heading north in Canada...

I drove past Hunter on Saturday - nothing there that I could see. Ditto for Windham.

You might want to try Belleayre, I also skied there on April 17th and Onteora had deep snow cover, I spoke with a snowmaker and he said that snow usually lasts on that trail into June. I heard that FIS at Sugarbush North had snow on May17th as did Sluice at Sugarloaf. Stratton may have some snow left in the half-pipe, I think that they save the snow for a competition on Memorial Day?? (at least they used to) You might want to check out these web cam sites for snow patches:

www.snoweye.com and http://www.onthesnow.com

How about something organized on a patch? If so, there's always Stowe this Saturday: http://www.FirstTracksOnline.com/news/stories/108549882638238.shtm

Does Stratton still have their halfpipe open on Memorial Day anymore? I think that Windham also once saved snow for a competition.

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
I think that Windham also once saved snow for a competition. <!-/Quote-!>

Windham is nothing but lush summer green now. I've seen it first-hand the past two weekends in a row.

Yes I saw the webcam picture, but do you remember if they did save snow in the past? I would love to see an updated cam of Sugarloaf, I'm sure that Skidder,Sluice and Hayburner still have skiable snowcover.

I have no offhand recollection at all, Kevin. Sorry. Perhaps someone else here does -- this group's maintenance of statistics and historical information never ceases to shock and amaze me.

Unfortunately, the webcam of Sugarloaf is completely green now with no pictures of the melting mountain...

Really cool, the idea of Stowe. Originally, I was thinking about something of this kind at la Réserve in june, after have skied it last year on june 1.

We got so much fun just to jump like crazy at Tremblant (even though we're absolutely not some jibbers) that I'm sure that many people would come, if they knew that there is some much snow remaining !

Frank:

Where did you see an updated cam of Sugarloaf? There website only shows the golf course. I have asked if there is still snow on the mountain at the underground chat area, but I am still waiting for a reply.

By the way, what area do you recommend for this season in Quebec, as a day trip from Sugarloaf. Mt Orford was alot of fun, even at -20F, but THANK GOD for the gondola. I will never forget the woman at the guest services desk, with the comment: Are you going to SKI today in this weather?

Sorry Kevin, little misunderstood here... I meant that it was only the golf course that was shown (it's why the "green")

From Sugarloaf, it's sure that if you're able to make it to the Massif du Sud, it would be incredibly amazing for you. (I actually wonder if you would return back to Sugarloaf and not just continue to the MDS ) (Ok, I exaggerate a bit, but...)

It's possibly a tiny bit farther from Sugarloaf than to reach Orford, but not significatively different.

There is also quite more snow than at Orford in january, normally, as the Massif du Sud is one of the ski areas with the most snow in the province. It's also some of the best glades in the east, with a whole mountain side of huge glades keeping an consistent steepness close to 30 degrees on over 800' high with absolutely no flats.

You can see this pic I took from the road 281. You see on left, there is a trail looking like a liftline, this is the famous (infernal) #5, which has a huge optical illusion on top. It looks like you're going to ski a cliff of 800' high, but the trail is going down, almost without cliffs (except in late spring), keeping a monster steepness that has nothing comparable in the province at least. On left on the pic, there is 3 huge glades, linked, where you can ski where you want in this huge land. On right of the #5, there is 2 similar glades, very steep and challenger and farther on right, near the other trails, there is another glade, which is one of the longest in the East, with over 1 mile long. on the first ½ mile, it becomes extremely steep on lines or you can follow a very long canyon longer than ½ mile long to the base. There is 3-4 different variations all merged to form one of the very best trails in the East, THE #8.

I must say something though. If it's -20F, just go to Orford, as the MDS is coooooooold as the chairlift pass above the treeline on the very long flat land near the summit.

I went twice this year on 47 ski days (up to now) and they hit #3 and #5 best days of the season ! Weirdly, both them were in the spring and were not some powder days, like the #1 (Réserve), #2 (Réserve) and #4 (Alta).

Where exactly is this place from Sugarloaf, I do not see it on my atlas map? I think to get you to Sugarloaf, I will have to resort to kidnapping Ha Ha.

No, Sugarloaf is truly on my wish list. Unluckily, january is the most crazy period of the year at the job, with the end of financial year on december 31. Last season, while you were at Sugarloaf, I was at Rouyn-Noranda for 2 weeks and I will probably be at the same place, next year on the same dates !

At least, I'll have the chance to return to Mt Kanasuta, which is an incredible little gem in Abitibi.

- 1 giga-extreme crazy glade
- 1 long extreme enough wild pitch
- Many off-piste skiable lines
- Tons of cliffs possible to jump
- Some nice mogul fields
- 1 big snowpark
- No Crowd
- Some wild trails and glades
- Good pitches and nice snow

Even with that, I would prefer to ski Sugarloaf, though, as Sugarloaf has a vertical 5x higher than mt Kanasuta ! LOL

The location of the Massif du Sud is eastern of Quebec city.

From Quebec, it's the I-20 to road 281 and farther 216 to reach the mountain

But from USA, by road 27, you take Road 204 (or 108) to reach St-Georges and the 173 on which you continue to road 216 that you follow for 45 minutes or so to reach the Massif du Sud. You can also take the road 201 in USA which lead you directly to road 173.

I follow your directions up until route 216, what direction on 216 north or south, what town is the ski area located in? We are not definate in our plans to go in January, but that is when childrens week is held, and Sugarloaf offers free day care and ski lessons for my son. Is Bromont worth the drive from Sugarloaf?

Oops, I'm thinking actually that the Massif du Sud is not open everyday of the week actually. May be it will be different next year.... not sure !

Anyway, for the road, it's 216 East. and the ski area is near St-Philémon.

Weird that the ski area is not located on your map !

Anyway, this is the location on the website :

http://www.quebecweb.com/massifdusud/images/routiere.jpg

Ok, I must say we only see the area near the mountain... but with the road numbers, it should help you...

Bromont... worth ? Not really, I think. I mean, this is a ski area where even on midweek at -20F, you have some crowds... with the cheap passes...

It was funny to see the parking lot, 2 years ago, the 1st year of the cheap passes. Even midweek, there was thousands of skier cars.

Jamesdeluxe (FTOer) went in the townships, this year, he wanted to go to Orford, but it was crowded, so after having seen the reports of Shefford on Zoneski, he tried the place and fell in love with it. Same thing for Mont Glen the next day. So... it depends of what kind of ski areas you're looking for !

Here are directions from Yahoo! Maps from Carrabassett, ME to St.-Philémon, QC. Massif du Sud is about an hour due southeast of Québec City, midway between the villages of Buckland and St.-Philémon on a side road off QC 216. It's 166 miles from Carrabassett to St.-Philémon, slightly longer than the 119 miles from Carrabassett to Orford.

Oh, yeah...the new owners of Massif du Sud, due to take possession in June, plan to operate 7 days -- but, of course, plans are always subject to change.

Marc, did you wrote an article about that (or get an article on the subject)... I never heard this new in Quebec...

The mountain could probably operate 7 days a week now, but I just hope the new owners will keep the mountain about like it is actually. I don't care of condos, but I don't want a new Tremblant that would kill this incredible gem in the middle of nowhere ! (but not so far from almost a million people)
