Patchs?? where are you

166 miles from Carrabassett Yikes!! Thats an extra long day trip. The ski area is not located on the 2003 Rand McNally atlas that I have in the office. I would also have to check if they have a ski school/day care for my son. We plan to go for at least 7-10 days next season, so we will have more time to ski other places than just at Sugarloaf. I would also like to ski at Black Mtn. Eaton Mtn or Mt Abram if possible. Thanks for all the information, now I hope for another mother of all snowfalls like last December, without the rainstorm chaser.

If the situation gets like last year, think to us. Even the townships avoided most of the rain last year and in the north, the rain has just did little damage on december 28-29 or so. I got 2 "so-so" days before to get back in the fresh pow pow with a solid base !

I will think about that, my brother keeps bugging me to ski with him in Quebec. Sugarloaf was devestated by the rain going from 124 trails to 42. This was partially because ASC did not build much base on top of the huge snowfall at Sugarloaf. I have never seen King Pine Bowl at 99% rocks. Still even with only 60-70 trails, -20F weather and wind hold, I still had fun.

Frankontour asked about Massif du Sud's plans:

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
Marc, did you wrote an article about that (or get an article on the subject)... I never heard this new in Quebec... <!-/Quote-!>

That's where the little FTO search utilities (the general search from the table of contents, or the yellow news search atop the news page) come in handy.

March 14, 2004: New Owner, New Development On and Off the Mountain for Québec's Massif du Sud

brrrrrrrrr (cold)

I'm not sure of the exact dates when you went to Sugarloaf last year, but look at those pics of January 17 at the Massif du Sud.

Marc, you're going to get a lot of visits of Zoneskiers in the next hours/days as the sale of the MDS was a hot debate on Zski.

Really thanks for these news, we didn't know that !

Okay, Go ahead Rub it in, be just like my brother calling me last saturday from Mt Batchelor, while Im cutting my lawn. I skied at Sugarloaf from January 11-16th, and while we did have 3-5" new snow on the 13th, it was nothing like those pictures. For sure if there is better snow elsewere, we will drive for it, but I hope to get those conditions at Sugarloaf.

Frank:

Is Mount Adstock worth a visit from Sugarloaf? The White Book has the vertical drop at 1029', so it not that much less than Massif Du Sud at 1320'
The guide does not say much about what type of terrain to expect.

Kevin,
I don't think Adstock is worth a detour visit from Sugarloaf (unless your an explore ski area mission). I skiied/raced there one weekend 12 years, nice mountain, but I wouldn't personally detour from Sugarloaf to go there. Sutton, Orford and MAssif du Sud are definately much better.

Patrick,

Thanks for the information, our trips beyond Sugarloaf are for both ski recreation and exploration. There is also another place on the map closer than Adstock called carpidireau or something to this effect???, ever heard if it?
I would not mind to do a report for First Tracks Online and Marc, if there is a ski area in the NEARBY region that the group is interested in.

Lol I guess you mean "Crapaudière" ?

The Crapaudière is a more intermediate ski area, but with a lot of glades according to the trail map. I'm in the rush now, so I can't give you a pic now, but I will once I'll get back home tomorrow... For now, I can tell you that there is another ski area in the Region : Mt Orignal which is quite more extreme, with a 2nd side where I wasn't able to believe the steepness of the liftline. It was looking like an average of 45 degrees on 600 feet high. I think I've never seen something that much spectacular in the province.

Mt Adstock is super extreme too, with a lot of extreme trails and where the intermediate would be rated "steep black trails" in the other ski areas of the province. There is some killer trails over there and crazy glades, but I never visited those 3 ski areas. I hope to do so, next season !

back 2 school !

Thanks for the reply, I think that we will be visiting Mt Adstock, as it looks to be the closer choice from Sugarloaf. We may also visit Bromont if possible, but I don't think that I could drive past Orford without stopping by again. I would slowly like to visit all of the Canadian/US ski areas that I have not been to near Sugarloaf. If only there were some major highways in western Maine/Southeastern Quebec.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but didn't La Crapaudière (one heluva funny name for a ski area for us anglophones) shut down for good a season or two ago?

It is a funny name, and I was pretty sure that's how it was spelled, but I did not want to risk it.
Hopefully it ski's better than it sounds. Marc is there a resort this would be interesting to report on in the area? Perhaps I will visit Camden Snowbowl again, I was there in February 1998, but without skis as we were coast sightseeing. The view of the Ocean was cool.

Kevin, feel free to pitch any ideas to me early next season. Frankly, I've got a lot of catching up to do right now just to complete our editorial agenda from last season.

I would like to add a skie area in Maine, most likely Mt abram, I don't think that I could endure another trip to Big Squaw.

Actually, there's already a piece on Abram in the pipe. It should be released late summer/early fall.

Sorry Frank to disagree, but from what I recall from my visit at Abstock in 1992 was steep runs, but not what I would call super extreme. It's true that I was racing, so I didn't get to explore the mountain. Maybe the "crazy" runs didn't exist back then, the shape of the mountain could definitely have some extreme stuff, but is there trails there now?

Do you have a trail map or a website for Abstock?
