I cant get past the paywall to read the details,

Anything I post from the NYT and WP is a gift article that should be unlocked for any reader without a subscription (see in red below). I don't understand why this keeps happening.

It looks like the NYT has changed their methodology for free articles to "give me your data so I can sell to you and also sell it to others". You now have to sign in to read the "free" article (which I won't ever be doing frankly):

As a workaround, I asked AI about posting the content of a gift article here and adding a disclaimer at the top that it's not a case of paywall dodging because I "paid" for it so others can read the piece. Here's the reply:

Pasting the full text of an article elsewhere is a violation of copyright law and the platform's terms of service, regardless of whether you used a gift link or added a disclaimer. While your frustration with publications making recipients sign in for every gift article and possibly surrender their data for tracking is shared by many users, paying for access does not grant you ownership of the content. Copying and distributing the full text constitutes copyright infringement because you do not hold the rights to reproduce the material.​

Moving forward with gift articles from the NYT and WP, I'll do the time-honored move of posting a few sentences and people can decide if they want to click on the link to read the entire piece, possibly requiring you to sign in. It's really not a big deal -- as a friend once said, "don't argue with free." Whenever anyone mentions that it's paywalled, I'll direct them to this post.
