PNW: The last trip of the season

Well I didn't really see the year go by. It's been a crazy year!!!

The most I've done in the past had been one trip a year out West, never two. Three? Impossible. Why this maddest? Did a get a raise? Win the lottery?

No, I was on a quest, a quest for skiing every month of the year in a single season. I guess you can blame it on Wildcat last October.

Yes, my wife thinks it's crazy. #-o

My mother thinks I should be locked up. ](*,)

However my kids think it's cool. 8) Especially that Morgane, my oldest, was going to get to ski while her classmates were back at school. :P

The only way this was going to fly and make sense was to make it part of my family vacation and gets some turns out of it.

Some here is some pictures from those two weeks.

Part 1:

August 22:

Flying Ottawa to Vancouver then a short flight down to Portland, Oregon.

The last flight line is spectacular. Right over the Juan de Fuca strait with Victoria on the right and the Cascades on the left (Baker, Glacier, fantastic view of Rainier and St. Helen). Right over downtown Seattle.

After arriving in Portland in the evening, we drove off to sleep near Olympia, Washington.

August 23:

Driving from Olympia west toward the Pacific and the Olympic Peninsula. Final destination: Port Angeles. Sent a few hours on the wide and sandy beach at Kalaloch then hiking in Hoh Rain Forest.

August 24:

Left west again in the fog to go to Neah Bay at the extreme NW corner of the continental US and back toward Port Angeles and Hurricane Ridge where we encounted our first patch of snow and mountain goats.

After a supper in Port Angeles, we drove off to Seattle with a late night ferry ride to downtown Seattle.

Part 2:

August 25-26:

Sightseeing in Seattle. Space Needle, Experience Music Project, the Market, Pioneer Square. A beautiful place.

August 27:

Mt. Rainier. Some hiking from the Sunrise center then a little hiking near the Paradise center. Sleep at Hobo Inn in Elbe where the rooms are train cabooses. Kids were sleeping when we got there, but they were really surprise the next morning.

August 28:

Mt. St.Helens (Windy Ridge) then a drive toward the Columbia River and across the bridge in Hood River for our final destination: Timberline Lodge.

Part 3:

August 29-30-31

We slept at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood for 3 nights leaving for the Oregon Central Coast on the 31th after skiing.

I skiied solo on the 29th and with Morgane on the 31th. The lifts were closed on the 30th because of snow, so we did a tour to the Gorge and the numerous Falls (Multnomah being the most spectacular) along the Columbia River.

For the ski related pics, I'll update the following reports:

Timberline: August 29th

Part 4 and the last part:

After our day of skiing we drove a few hours (waiting in a traffic jam in Portland) to Florence on Central Oregon Coast.

September 1:

Florence and the Dunes in the Oregon Dunes NP. Another beautiful beach in a different setting. Water is still pretty cold. Driving North we stopped at the Sea Lion Caves and eventually sleeping in Newport. Beautiful town and harbour. To the delight of the kids and adults, sea lions were everywhere in the port.

September 2:

Visited the Aquarium in Newport and drove north along the coast all the way to Seaside. Made a few stops along the way. Agate Beach (mini-dunes all over the beach) and a longer stop/hike at the Neahkalnie Beach in the Oswald West State Park to watch a few surfers. After supper in Seaside, we made it back to Portland. We're would would stay for the next 4 nights.

September 3-4:

I parted with the rest of the family to get my September turns and the last turns lift-serviced turns in North American for the 2005-06 ski season. The family visited the Children's Museum and the Zoo. I would be back in the late afternoon and did some local sightseeing in the neighbourhood. Very pleasant.

September 5:

My ski season is over, great I can sleep past 5am.

Visited the OMSI (Oregon Museum Science and Industry) and walked and drove around Portland. Flying out at 6am the next day.

It was a fun trip and there was something for everybody.
