Powder Nights in Central NY

This January central NY has been blessed with a continuous light snow that just won't quit. Winds from the north pick up moisture off Lake Ontario producing a very fine and light snowfall over Greek Peak. Every day 1-3" refresh the already powdery surfaces. Supplemented by man-made snow with the consistency of talcum powder, the conditions have been stellar. Sure the temperatures have been challenging, but this is why the snow quality is so good.

Tele-tuesday is a popular night out amongst the pinheads. Last night with temps in the single digits and windchills below zero kept many people away, but the pinheads still outnumbered the fixed healed skiers.

The skiing was excellent. So good that I'm going back tonite!

i have read about this snow that has fallen--the lake effect and thats its been really great skiing.these lucky spots in ny...like snow ridge in turin, and brantling slopes in sodus ny..keep making the new snowfall report lists. brantling picked up 7" last nite into this morning.its a small area, but very cool--located between 2 roads top and bottom!kinda unique.
as far as other ny areas,,,anyone ski LABRADOR,TITUS MT,OR GREEK PK? im wondering about going into ny for a ski journey soon.

Brian,

Where you from?

I'd recommend Greek Peak. Lab is not very steep or big. Titus I've heard it OK. Snow Ridge gets the lake effect. Maybe we'll go there this weekend instead of Whiteface, as they are expecting more snow.

-Sh

sharon---im from worcester ma--where in ny are you from? ny seems to have a buncha good ski areas---obviously whiteface/gore/hunter i'd love to ski...but its quite a distance.

i think i read today that snow ridge got 2 ft of snow!!!!!!! if thats true...wow! brian o

Yeah, the lake effect this past week has been fabulous. Too bad Snow Ridge is only 500' of vert, but still, its a powder pig heaven so I've heard. Maybe I'll get there this season. We thought about going there on sunday on our way back from Lake Placid, but the skiing at Whiteface was very good so we stayed there.

We are expecting a nice storm to come through this area tonite and tmrw. I live near Ithaca, NY, just 25 min from Greek Peak. We've been having a great winter so far. I'm thinking Tuesday may be a powder-night for us under the lights at Greek Peak.

Looks like you're going to get a serious dump this week: http://www.snow-forecast.com/maps/appalsnow60.php

The heavy snow didn't start until 4pm and that is the time I stepped out of my office, ski pants on, boots over the shoulder.

Easy drive to the mtn, as the snow hadn't accumulated much on the roads and the previous night's snow was plowed/salted.

Tele-tuesday attracts a rippin group of telemarkers. They totally kicked my ass, however, I was the first to arrive and I was the last to leave. I skied for 4 hours straight, no break, no power bar, no nothin but psych and adrenaline. A very light cold snow fell heavily upon the already powdery surfaces. Some old friends and some new gathering to welcome in the storm.

It piled up. Powder turns all night long. In the bumps, in the flats, steeps, fluff n fluff. Face shots. Now I really know what its like to telemark in the powder. My Super Stinx ate it up. I really got an appreciation for what that ski can do in the powder.

The drive home was treacherous. I saw a car slide off the road, slowly. Avg speed was about 35 mph. It took 4 tries to get the cars up the driveway. I got face shots in my Subaru. We've got over a foot of snow already and its still coming down.

I can't wait until tmrw. Fresh deep snow in the powder morning.
