Rain damage (stowe)

don't bother.
i know stowe isn't sunday river but, a friend of mine said that western maine, which had a pretty deep snowpack lost 2/3rds of it's snowpack, now down to 8-10 inches. i know it poured at stowe and was 50 degrees with hot winds last night. it was bound to happen, almost startin from scratch but, still ahead of last year at this time with one helluva winter already skied. glad i hit it hard cuz you just never know. going mountain biking down south tomorrow.
have fun
bring those CCM'S

on a brighter angle, if ya stay south to ski, at least it might be warm and sunny enough to slice those edges through some winter corn. wachusett maybe?

Wow, I'm not sure where you heard this stuff, but if you're referring to Stowe in Vermont, I think someone is feeding you some disinformation.

The highest temperature recorded at the Mt. Mansfield stake in the past week was 38 F in association with Sunday’s event, and the snowpack that was at 55 inches on Saturday is at 51 inches as of the reading today (Monday). There’s also been more than half a foot of new snow in the area today (Smuggler’s across the notch was already reporting 6 inches new as of their 4:00 P.M. report and it was still coming down). At our place in the valley (Waterbury), our snowpack that was at 18 inches on Saturday, was down to 13 inches this morning, and was back up to 16 inches this afternoon after today’s snowfall (3.1 inches of new snow down here). We’re about 10 miles from Stowe Mountain Resort as the crow flies, and while I didn’t physically go to the resort today, I have a hard time believing that much happened to their snowpack based on what I’ve seen from the stake data and the weather data I’ve gathered here in Waterbury. The conditions after the warm-up aren’t going to be nearly as soft as they were before, but if I wasn’t heading out of town tomorrow for the holiday, I’d probably be catching some powder up at Bolton or in the backcountry. If we got 3 inches at our house, it’s likely someone in the higher elevations is going to have 6-12 inches, which is still a decent day even if the base has firmed up.

Sunday River/western Maine gets well under half the snowfall of Northern Vermont. A thin base will go isothermic and collapse more quickly in adverse rain/thaw than a deeper base with a sub-freezing refrigerated core.

A quick perusal of trail counts http://www.snocountry.com/snowclient/sr ... =statelist shows Sugarloaf taking a big hit from 81% down to 38%. Sunday River 88% down to 70%. Not much hit in northern Vermont, Jay, Stowe, Sugarbush, MRG all claiming full operation. But Killington went from 87% to 50%. In terms of how much of this is still worth skiing, I'll leave to you guinea pigs for eyewitness reports.

You didn't see any trip reports from me after Saturday this long weekend, and for good reason. Don't be expecting any eyewitness reports from me until this weekend  Though NoVT did get some snow yesterday into today so I suspect they are in fine recovery mode. At least with NoVT reporting all trails open, that means the trails are at least in skiable condition and not roped by default. 3-5" at Jay makes it at least worth while after the first round of skiers scrape down and break up the crusties.

I've been down in Albany, NY for the past few days and have yet to be up to the resort (Stowe) since Friday, but my contacts there have been pleased with how the mountain responded to the rain. Still haven't heard any true first hand reports but the trail openings show most of the stuff is at least skiable which is a big step after a rain/freeze cycle. Not much snow loss followed by a wind-blown 6" for Monday morning's report. J.Spin's report from Waterbury sounds spot on and if there's one guy I trust in the mtns to give accurate, un-biased reports, its JSpin.

I'm heading to Bromley on Friday and then will be back in the Stowe swing of things this weekend.

I'm back east for the holidays. I'll be trying out MRG tomorrow and Jay on Fri. Hopefully it won't be too awful. I was all excited that i'd actually have good skiing back east this year, but then i brought rain with me when i flew in on sunday. sorry bout that.

would give a report, but doubt i'll have internet access.

hoping for the best when i return friday night. maybe make night turns at btv. been missing it terribly. saturday at smuggs. at least i'll see friends even if the turns are variable

FWIW, the Rangers up on Mt. Washington reported fairly insignificant snow loss from the rain last Sunday as well, and it still looks very white up there on the webcam. Tonight supposed to bring several inches of new to VT & NH, and maybe the weekend as well. Cold shot supposed to set in next week, so ideal for snowmaking. Hopefully a storm blows in before the cold air retreats, which I've heard it's supposed to do after next week. Think NEGATIVE! (as in the NAO going negative!)

hey joey spin,
the 50 degrees and hot rain was for the town of stowe, not the mansfield stake and i got that off the current noaa site. that would tell me that if i were to head to stowe in the next couple of days, without a good deal of new snow, that the conditions would probably not be worth the drive especially during a holiday week.
jason cape cloud,
you asked for a report and and i gave you a report for maine which also got the warm temps, rain and freeze up. maybe maine dosen't have the stowe-pack but who cares when the surface is the same.
50 inch stowe stake don't mean squat to me unless the snow feels good underfoot.
tony, yer a loser.
pray for snow

I wouldn't be interested in skiing a bulletproof surface at Stowe either. But as at Whistler 3 weeks ago, Stowe's skiing will be fine once there is a big enough storm to resurface it. I'm sure powderfreak will tell us when. Some of the other places will be starting over building a natural base. Let's see when Sugarloaf gets back to being 80% open. It could be awhile.
