Saturday's storm track over Laurentian snow zone

Saturday?s storm track moved down the St. Lawrence valley pulling in colder air over the Laurentians and areas north east of the St Lawrence river valley. 6 to 10 inches of wet snow fell with no rain as temperatures remained just below the freezing point north of the river. As temperatures dropped the snow dried out leaving decent conditions for making turns today. Snapped this picture while kids in lessons.

It was definitively awesome, this 12" of snow at Alta today, in the snowbelt... no wet snow there, it was all fluffy... just perfect to enjoy it after all the rain of the past 2 weeks !

No video for me this weekend, as we were there only for 3 hours, but I guess this could give you an idea of the woods today !

Oh man, looks like I made a big mistake in picking Saturday to drive back to New York. What surprised me though is that there were like 5-6 cm on the ground in Montreal by the time I finally left in the early afternoon, but once you got to the border on the 15/87 it was completely bare, everything was brown and I didn't hit snow at all for the rest of the trip. I had originally thought of stopping at Whiteface on my way south but it looked so crappy in that region that I didn't have much regret...

Correct , wet snow not the correct term as it was more the type of moisture content that you receive at temperatures just below the freezing point and then by Sunday the snow had dried out to quality loose powder snow.

Light snow is in the forecast for the next 2 /3 days with accumulation totaling about 4 to 5 inches. This is on top of the snow that fell last weekend . Temperatures will remain just below the freezing point which is rare for our region in January (usually much colder). Overall skiing should be fine this weekend with packed powder conditions and the usual icy areas developing in high traffic zones. The natural snow coverage is good as the meltdown and rain effect on areas north of the St. Lawrence is not as extensive as further south. You will notice this as you drive north from Montreal.

With Alta closed for skiing midweek actually, the 4-5" expected + all the powder left after last week snowfall, it should be rated as a powder day this saturday... so I should be there at the opening... hmmmm... powder !
