Ski Plattekill N.Y 02-14-04

I was too tired last night to post this report, but I spent yesterday at Ski Plattekill in Andes N.Y. I have not been to this place in two years time and I wanted to do some skiing with the new (old double chair from Belleayre) installed on the northface. Conditions were mixed with most of the north facing trails having a mix of packed powder and 2-3" diameter ice cookies that would make pillsbury pround. This was due in part to poor grooming and the snow-rain-freeze of last weekend. The south facing trails served by the triple chair were in very good shape with mostly packed powder. Overall I had a fun day taking 21 runs at 1100' vertical each for $37, a very good deal for the money. This is my 4th time at this place in 10 years, but I plan to ski it much more in the future.

It was alot of fun to watch all of the traffic in front of us on route 28 turn left into the Belleayre parking lot. This is an undiscovered mini Mad River Glen of the Catskills with abundant (250") snowfall and uncrowded conditions.

We did dip into the glades, but there was 5" of powder on top of a very thin ice crust that made turns difficult. Crowds were minimal with perhaps 500 people on the mountain at once. This is a nice place that is certainly worth the effort to ski with 35 trails and 1100' vertical. Blockbuster was the trail of the day with nice soft bumps and a good pitch.

Hmmm, Kevin...image resizing problem on the other two?

Hints for folks on this topic: I found that resizing a jpeg to 420x315 and compressing at 40% -- as I've done here -- brings in an image around 20 kb. It's still large enough to be fully legible, yet is half of our maximum size.

Here are the images with the proper size:
