Skiing in N.C. this weekend?

I personally find it amusing that a North Carolina ski area may open before any in New England this winter. ....

This IS amusing, but not very suprising. A buddy of mine has reported that last week backcountry skiers were able to find skiable lines in Canaan Valley, WVa. I believe that the NC area is on the same ridge of the coldest mountains of Canaan Valley and Snowshoe, WVa.

Late season backcountry is often available in WVa too. In past years Snowshoe, WVa offered lift served skiing until mid-April. During the last week of April three years ago, I was able to find enough snow in Canaan to test new climbing skins and make tracks.

Cheers,
Jeff

Looks like it is now official...

Here are the details from their website:

This year?s bragging rights for the first ski resort in the east to open for the season goes to Cataloochee Ski Area, located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. The southeast resort will be providing the first skiing and riding of the 2006/2007 season for winter snowsports enthusiasts beginning this Saturday, November 4, when the slope ropes drop at 8:30 am This will be Cataloochee?s earliest opening ever in its 46-year history, 15 days ahead of the 2005/2006 season opening.

The question is...what will the others say?

Just out of curiousity I just looked in Mapquest to see how far that is Ottawa and if it was worth a drive this weekend.

Total Est. Time: 16 hours, 14 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 1010.69 miles

I guess I won't be there on the FIRST day in the East this year.

Well, NOW they turn the lights on for the webcam! That thing was pitch black last night so I couldn't see if they were making snow or not. Just remember where you heard it first.

Patrick, Ottawa to Ski Brule, MI is 801 miles - seems like an easier drive. Besides, the little hamlet on the map right outside the ski area's town of Ironwood is called Montreal, so how far could it be??

This is all very tough to take.. Since I am only 90miles to the SNOW MAKING CAPTITAL OF THE WORLD....Hunta is disapointing me :x

Sorry over 800 miles is just too much for anyhting ski area East of the Rockies. I guess that 797 miles would be the maximum.

Total Est. Time: 16 hours, 34 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 797.00 miles

That the distance between Ottawa and Lac La Belle (MI) near Mount Bohemia.

On second though, If I want to go skiing will just climb the mountains a few hours from here.

Isnt' tyrol basin (which opened last sunday) closer than Ski Brule anyway ?

Nope. Ottawa to Mt. Horeb, WI is 956.8 miles.

But are you absolutely certain that they opened last Sunday? We hadn't heard anything, and when Wild Mountain opened this week they reported themselves as the first ski area to open in Wisconsin and Minnesota, so apparently word escaped them, too, if Tyrol opened. Tyrol's website says that they plan to open this Friday through Sunday as they're making snow, but doesn't mention opening last Sunday.

Hmm, last sunday, it was written on their website that they were open on 1 trail, if I correctly remember. I was surprised to see them open that fast. On RSN/Snow, it was also written that the mountain was opening on Oct 29. I saw their website tonight and it looks strange, though as they're not talking about "re"opening this weekend. May be they changed their mind and didn't changed their website. Tough to say without calling them directly...

Cataloochee is 6 hours south of Snowshoe. Our elevation is 5400'. And will have 3 nights of ideal snowmaking conditions. Management is loyal to their customers and enjoys the promotion they get out bragging right to be first in the south let alone the east. My season starts tomorrow!

Cataloochee may have the best lift-served option in the East tomorrow, but it won't be the first:

Their bragging rights will have to be limited to the South, at least for this season.

Woodbury or Cataloochee?

Much closer, but still no cigar.

Ottawa to the closest lift-serving skiing:

Total Est. Time: 7 hours, 34 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 438.19 miles

Woodbury is still too far, ESPECIALLY for the 100 feet vertical on a beginner hill.

Heck I could get a 25-30 feet steep vertical only within a 5 minute walk from my house tonight. I just need to shovel the snow from the back arena until the slope next to the overpass. :o

From the Madison Wisconsin State Journal newspaper Nov. 3 edition:

Tyrol Basin Ski & Snowboard Area, west of Mount Horeb, is scheduled to open today, marking the earliest opening for the ski area nestled into the unglaciated town of Vermont.
