Skiing on June 27th 2027.

It is not necessary to take any more than boots, gloves and multipurpose clothing. Definitely not skis and poles. I may be prejudiced about helmets, but they are bulky for travel and obviously not that comfortable in late June weather. This is a direct analogy to Liz and me in Lesotho in 2024. From pics it appears that Liz rented a helmet in Lesotho.

There is one public lane skier's left from Plamer. There was more terrain open skier's right in 2022 in the area that is usually melted out by August. Magic Mile, also often burned off by August, was widely skiable and transitioned to corn before Palmer did. See TRs from June 29 and July 1. 2022 was a 121% season at Hood Meadows, so I didn't know how much above average our experience was, but there was much more public terrain available that what you get when trying to score August or September turns.

I am not sure I would even take my ski boots. I don't think one would need more than Sbooker packed for the Alps with lingering May snow cover in the alpine.


My point, the terrain is so mellow that you do not need well-fitted ski boots:
  • Magic Mile. This is essentially Novice terrain, but marked Intermediate to balance colors on the map. Besides, mgt would not want beginners going up there. One does not need to turn in order to keep speed.
  • Low Palmer. Maybe intermediate.
  • Upper Palmer. Nice sustained advance pitch. Lanes are salted. Yes, skier's right (of chairlift) and skier's left (of racing lanes) allow for some worthwhile exploration.
My experiences at Timberline are often during big snow years, when they would even open 2-3 lifts in the lower bowl until July 1st+.


And I know the date would be nice, but poor weather is still possible in June, when one does not want to be on a volcano - skiing/hiking/climbing.
 
I don’t think boots are at all hard to travel with. Throw them in the back of the rental car and don’t touch them until the ski day.
