Snow departure from normal

You can read all the stats that you like, but here is one that stood out to me. <BR> <BR><A HREF="http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/summary.html" TARGET="_top">http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/summary.html</A> <BR> <BR>Look at the season departure from normal for snowfall. It was pretty bad this year. Here is hoping for a 100 inch above normal year next year! <BR> <BR>porter

Hey Porter, <BR>I just saw that stat too. I was actually quite surprised that they had the May report done so soon because they usually slack a little and dont get it out until the 4-5th of the month. What struck me was that there was about the same departure from normal lats month, but I was confused because in all of the stats that I had seen for Mt Washy the avg snowfall is like 253" a year. If you add up what theyve been saying, the avg snowfall would be something like 311.5". Now, not that I'm complaining, but is that really true? Did they just redo the 5 or 10 yr averages to find that the avg went up? (so much for global warming) Does anyone have any information on this? <BR>~Les

Hey Les, <BR> <BR>I am actually going to be interning there this summer. I'll ask them when I am up there. That is a good question, I hadn't noticed. <BR> <BR>porter

They keep flip-flopping between the "normal" and "average" values. Their "means & extremes" page lists the "normals", but the daily & monthly reports lately have been listing the "average". It's played hell with my Excel spreadsheet, but I think we were at 66% of "average" year at end of April. I haven't updated through end of May yet. thanks, salida, for the reminder. That should be a cool internship!

Ok, here's my summary table, based on the Mount WAshington Observatory statistics: <BR> <BR><TABLE BORDER=1><TR><TD>Month</TD><TD>Average Monthly Snowfall</TD><TD>Mean Monthly Snowfall</TD><TD>Total for the Month</TD><TD>Departure from Average</TD><TD>Percent of Average</TD><TD>Seasonal Total</TD><TD>Departure from Average Seasonal Total</TD><TD>Departure from Average Seasonal Total %</TD><TD>Departure from Mean Seasonal Total</TD><TD>Departure from Mean Seasonal Total % </TD></TR><TR><TD>July '03</TD><TD>Trace</TD><TD>Trace</TD><TD>0.00''</TD><TD>--</TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD>--</TD><TD>n/a</TD><TD>--</TD><TD>n/a </TD></TR><TR><TD>August '03</TD><TD>0.20''</TD><TD>0.10''</TD><TD>0.00''</TD><TD>-0.20''</TD><TD>0.00%</TD><TD>0.00''</TD><TD>-0.20''</TD><TD>n/a</TD><TD>-0.10''</TD><TD>n/a </TD></TR><TR><TD>September '03</TD><TD>2.20''</TD><TD>1.90''</TD><TD>trace</TD><TD>-2.40''</TD><TD>0.00%</TD><TD>trace</TD><TD>-2.40''</TD><TD>n/a</TD><TD>-2.00''</TD><TD>n/a </TD></TR><TR><TD>October '03</TD><TD>13.80''</TD><TD>11.80''</TD><TD>26.90''</TD><TD>13.10''</TD><TD>194.93%</TD><TD>26.90''</TD><TD>10.70''</TD><TD>166.05%</TD><TD>13.10''</TD><TD>48.70% </TD></TR><TR><TD>November '03</TD><TD>40.80''</TD><TD>40.40''</TD><TD>15.40''</TD><TD>-25.40''</TD><TD>37.75%</TD><TD>42.30''</TD><TD>-14.70''</TD><TD>74.21%</TD><TD>-11.90''</TD><TD>-28.13% </TD></TR><TR><TD>December '03</TD><TD>50.00''</TD><TD>42.60''</TD><TD>51.30''</TD><TD>1.30''</TD><TD>102.60%</TD><TD>93.60''</TD><TD>-13.40''</TD><TD>87.48%</TD><TD>-3.20''</TD><TD>-3.42% </TD></TR><TR><TD>January '04</TD><TD>52.80''</TD><TD>40.10''</TD><TD>25.10''</TD><TD>-27.70''</TD><TD>47.54%</TD><TD>118.70''</TD><TD>-41.10''</TD><TD>74.28%</TD><TD>-18.20''</TD><TD>-15.33% </TD></TR><TR><TD>February '04</TD><TD>42.40''</TD><TD>40.70''</TD><TD>25.60''</TD><TD>-16.80''</TD><TD>60.38%</TD><TD>144.30''</TD><TD>-57.90''</TD><TD>71.36%</TD><TD>-33.30''</TD><TD>-23.08% </TD></TR><TR><TD>March '04</TD><TD>54.10''</TD><TD>42.50''</TD><TD>37.00''</TD><TD>-17.10''</TD><TD>68.39%</TD><TD>181.30''</TD><TD>-75.00''</TD><TD>70.74%</TD><TD>-38.80''</TD><TD>-21.40% </TD></TR><TR><TD>April '04</TD><TD>42.70''</TD><TD>30.90''</TD><TD>17.60''</TD><TD>-25.10''</TD><TD>41.22%</TD><TD>198.90''</TD><TD>-100.10''</TD><TD>66.52%</TD><TD>-52.10''</TD><TD>-26.19% </TD></TR><TR><TD>May '04</TD><TD>12.50''</TD><TD>10.30''</TD><TD>3.90''</TD><TD>-8.60''</TD><TD>31.20%</TD><TD>202.80''</TD><TD>-108.70''</TD><TD>65.10%</TD><TD>-58.50''</TD><TD>-28.85% </TD></TR><TR><TD>June '04</TD><TD>1.20''</TD><TD>1.20''</TD><TD>0.00''</TD><TD>-1.20''</TD><TD>0.00%</TD><TD>202.80''</TD><TD>-109.90''</TD><TD>64.85%</TD><TD>-59.70''</TD><TD>-29.44% </TD></TR><TR><TD>Totals</TD><TD>312.70''</TD><TD>254.00''</TD><TD>202.80''</TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD></TD><TD> </TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TABLE> <BR> <BR>Can it get any worse?
