Lonnie and I started with Wilbere about 9:10. The route to Gadzoom using Bryce’s was roped off so rather than flat route to Gadzoom, I returned to Wilbere and lost Lonnie. We re-connected on Baldy after he took a lap on already busy Little Cloud and we each took one on Baldy. We caught the rope drop at top of chair that allows you to step-up to lookers left. We did not hike very far, but had some turns in decent wind-sift. Next time up we skied groomed Extrovert at Alta. We wanted to get to Supreme, but were too low and had long line for Sugarloaf. We should have taken singles as chair was stopping a lot and line took 15 minutes. This is Sugarloaf line at 11:35 when I was leaving area. End of singles line not shown.
I wasn’t sure why the very few people who were already on Devil’s Castle hike when we skied Sugarloaf were not dropping off into
untracked, but they were when we skied out Cecret gate. Conga line on hike to Devil’s Castle was too more than I
could do since I was quitting early. We rode Supreme (less than 5 min singles line and hiked to Catherine’s staying high enough to get a little shaded and lightly skied more than 2 day old powder. The exit past boundary line was getting thick. Lonnie and I separated, and since line was short, I rode Collins and skied against the ropeline at end of Ballroom. Then I went further left and skied fast groomer to ride Wildcat and skied White Cliffs to return to Snowbird. Snow there was less baked than Catherine’s, but still past it’s prime. I quit before 12:30 with 13.3K.
The drive to Tahoe reminded me why I spent night at Wendover on way from So. Tahoe to UT on previous Mon as it seemed a lot longer on way back. I stopped at Bonneville Salts Flat vista point/rest area where I tried to take a short nap and started an energy drink that took until after Elko to kick in. I was surprised to see people parked and walking on salt flats and asked a couple of people if it was a special event. Is it No Trespassing or Enter At Your Own Risk?
My drive was 580 miles. I paid $4.29 for gas in Battle Mountain and $4.65 in Dayton. The highlight/lowlight was getting a double meat/single cheese the way I like it (with grilled onions and their excellent pickles) at In-N-Out. It took more than 10 minutes to get it from when I ordered even though it was late and not very busy inside. Will try drive-through next time as it looked way faster.
Tahoe is under a high wind warning through 11 AM Sunday. I had very light snow flurries ascending from Carson City to Spooner Summit on US-50. I had planned on Squaw today, but ended up with enough food that others purchased for Iron Blosam, some of which should be refrigerated, that instead of stopping along I-80 or staying with friends near Truckee, I stayed at family's cabin in So. Tahoe and borrowed another ice chest from cabin to keep it cold the rest of the way home. Kirkwood, plan B to ski on way home this AM already announced chair 10/The Wall will be closed due to wind.
