Snows... freezes...

Effectively, in many ski areas in the west, there was some snow accumulations in the last hours. I will take a look to all the RSN webcams this evening. Grand Targhee is pretty cool to see, with a good snow even at the bottom of mountain. Crested Butte is quite cool too

Hey... in 1 month, it will be OUR first snowfalls !! (in the last 3 years, they were on oct 8-9 for most mountains). Last year, I've seen my 1st natural snow at both Mt Garceau and la Réserve on october 14.

Would you believe it... on the day of the following pic, there was enough snow, on the upper mountain (Garceau). This is my very best pic not showing snow ever. (I got a free lift ticket for it ) I should have sold it to the ski area, though ! They actually use it for their promotion about fall activities. Unfortunately, I must pass it under 40kb here, but it remains nice ;)

Mt Garceau - Chiquita/Route - Oct 14, 2002

http://www.telemarktips.com/TeleNews13.html

Silverton. Today. Turns.

B*****rd...

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'm crying to be at home in Laval QC

Thanks Mr Anonymous !!

AWESOME,
The first day of real snow of the season, I am incredibly excited. Soon very soon the high peaks like mount washington will have snow. Tenny and K-mart will be open in less then a month. It is already 4 or 5 degrees below freezing in northern new england and quebec. Just a few more days now.
Porter

Check these pictures and summaries out, some of them are from last year but you can tell which ones are new. http://www.rsn.com/cams/view_all.html?segment_type=mtn&region=Rockies awesome
porter

incredibly excited is 20% of my feeling now.
It's so tough to think I'm stick at home reading thousands of pages of boring school books (thousands = not exagerated unfortunately)

Thanks for the pics link, Porter !

THINK SNOW ... HERE !!!!!

At the risk of being the wet blanket here, I must point out that low water content Colorado snow almost never sticks around long enough to build a secure base in the early season. Mid-January is a good rule of thumb for adequate coverage of steep terrain at most Colorado areas.

That said, this is the second year we've seen these Silverton pictures, and I'm now willing to entertain the possibility that it has a high snow microclimate like Wolf Creek. Knox Williams, who has been doing avalanche forecasting for 30+ years in Colorado, says no, but he has no hard data from Silverton. I am even more eager to ski Silverton next March, and hopefully get to the bottom of this mystery.

According to the website, the top of lift is "only" at 12300' (or so), but according to Castlerock (Lurker here, writer at T4T), the skiable summit is at 13300' high. This is higher than A-basin. So it wouldn't be very surprising to see a big microclimate there...

I'm almost jealous, knowing that you're going to ski this new gem ! At least, I hope you will send us few pics + commentary

With conditions like those, mabye it is a microclimate, like wolf creek or jay peak is in the east. Very possible, well have to wait and see because their is hardly enough data to support either conclusion.

Porter

Oh and here are some more pics of silverton for any of you guys who havent been looking hard enough! Just Kidding
http://www.silvertonmountain.com/gallery/album07
porter

hahaha, too funny
Alta (Utah) got a little bit of snow, in the last days, like many other places in the west, but I didn't think it could have been skied.....

I'm not sure if I'm enough crazy to do this... not with some new skis for sure !!! (I hope there was a little bit more snow when it has been skied !)

oh man, i went away for a quick 3 day canoe trip in Algonquin Park Ontario, and all hell breaks loose when i'm gone; people making turns, resorts opening... now the camping gear is away, and I'M DYING having seen these picks and read the summaries....
Breaking out in a cold sweat...
Need to make some turns....

Soon Jonny... soon...

Will you attempt to be at Killington for the 1st ski day ?

Me I won't, cause of the school.................
It's too bad to think to that...

I think so, depends what I am doing at that point. I am unemployed right now, though I prefer to think of it as being ready to ski anytime.
The picture of Alta looks kind of funny, got a good laugh out of that.

Killington reporting that snowmaking will begin at the end of september (tentatively of course.)

I'm eager to see that, for snowmaking at K-mart !

About unemployment, I share your idea about the concept : it is really to be ready to ski anytime ! I should forget about my studies just for that... hmm... hmm... it may not be a great idea....

I'm so eager to read the "real" first ski report in the east, on FTO !! I don't think it's gonna be mine, although if they got 4-6" at la Réserve in mid-oct like last year (and out of my test times), I'm off to the "Croque-Mitaine" trail or somewhere very flat without rocks near the top !!

I WANNA SKI (new version of the classic Twisted Sister's rock song !)

NEW INFO

If you check out http://www.accuweather.com for any of the cities in NH, VT for October the 5th they are predicting some snow. Very early for low elevation cities. I know the forcast is still 10 -12 days out, but hey that is a great sign.
Porter in NH
