Spring skiing

Is it me... or are the no-bulls amazingly quiet these days ?

I see on the weather forecast that the fu**** spring is coming right now. Too bad as I wasn't complaining about all the powder we had to ski this year over here.

Last weekend missed storm was really a cold shower for us, as we got some rain instead of the winter storm alert of the prior day.

This weekend begins the school holiday week, so it's going to be extremely crowded in the ski areas, but I may go to Orford sunday anyway, as I didn't ski MY trail this year (Contour).

I wonder how will be the conditions for the following weekend. Still thinking about Cannon (of course), but if there is already not a lot of snow... and that it's 40-50 all week long before, what will remain in Mittersill and the other spots ?

Anyway, we're going to see that next week.

If you want to prolong winter, go West, or farther east to the Alps. Altitude/exposure rule in March/April.

Check out my reports from Chamonix last week, or Marc's from Courchevel last season. You should consider France as a destination. Awesome terrain, and in your native tongue.

Hmm, I'll begin to ski up to june here at least

Whoops, thanks for the reminder to look outside of the eastern section sometimes !

Frank and NHPH,
I dont know if you guys have already seen, but despite the fact that its getting warmer and spring-like (oh crap), go onto http://www.chauvinguides.com/conditionski.htm . They are finally some people venturing up into the ravine to enjoy some decent snow on some runs. My only worry is that there isnt enough snow now for it to last a decent amount of time this summer. It is a very low snow year, and there is a strangely run-specific loading pattern that all the smaller snowfalls and high winds have been producing. Right gully, right right, the sluice, and the lip are pretty full, the sluice being the fullest, but everything else is mediocre at best.... :-/ The only thing that might help would be if the weather suddenly got wetter (more snowy) from now till may or so, which has fixed low-snow years before, but who knows. Hope for the best and pray for that damn snow!
~Les

Also, umm, yeah. here's the snow that we should be getting, or at least if not us down here in CT, then up in NH dammit! Its not even worth it snoing down there, bc its all gonna melt in like 2 days. we could at least make more use of it!
What is this?

sorry, the link for Chauvin again
http://www.chauvinguides.com/conditionski.htm
~Les

http://www.chauvinguides.com is a great resource for researching b/c conditions.
I'm headed up to sled tomorrow and plan to make it into the ravine. If things look good I will return to ski saturday, sunday or monday befor I head to Jay Peak for several days.Right,Right Right, and Sluice look good.Left is always a good choice too.
I agree that the ravine will go quick this year as skiing is just now getting good, which is about a month behind schedule in most snow years. You never know though, three months of snow could be a couple weeks away for Mount Washington.
((*
*))NHPH

hmmmm, nice pics today !

I'm eager to ski that... even though the ravine won't stay skiable that much long this summer...

let's go, march snowfalls !!!

One thing that I can add to this conversation, is that most of the people along the coast of N.Y and C.T have seen more snow above the normal average than in the rest of the east. In my town we have had about 50-55" of snow, and that is alot more than the average of 28". Most people in New York City and Long Island are tired of snow + January was the coldest month since 1976-1977. You would think that all of this snow was good for the local skiing, but most of the snow was followed by warm weather and rain. This perception of a long snowy winter has really caused a great reduction in the number of skier visits at most major resorts this year, not to mention the smaller ones, despite generally good conditions.

I have only had 10 days so far this year, but the traffic at all of my ski days was the lightest that I can remember. I am curious how the 10-20% drop in skier visits this year in New England will affect ASC???? I am thinking about another trip to either Plattekill or Belleayre this weekend, but I do not know if the skiing conditions are worth the trip. I want to get another 3-5 days this year in March and over easter vacation, but I think that will be it for me, due to work obligations.

The place that got all the snow this year is the eastern townships here, I think. The snowpack is simply huge with something like 80-100" of natural snowdepth in the mountains (not skied).

So I guess the skiing will still be amazing for the easter !

This year, I will still attempt for june skiing in Quebec, but I'm not sure if it will be possible. There is visibly less snow than last year in the Loup-Garou of la Réserve (the Canyon where I skied up to june). However, there is another trail of the mountain : "The Luge" which has some snowmaking since this year. It seems to have a ton of snow and even though it's not in a canyon, it's mostly hidden of the sun. Last year on april 19, it was still skiable with a correct base... with only natural snow !!! so I guess that with 6 feet of snowmaking added it will be skiable for a while !!

So my prediction of skiability :

Loup-Garou : June 1 (compared to about june 10 last year)

The Luge : May 25

Anyway, I'm going to see that in 2 months, when the ski season will be ended in 95% of the mountains)
