Steep,Long GROOMERS NH??? VT??

I have stayed at Parkers. We just had a big discussion on places to stay On the Alpine Zone. We are doing an outing in Feb. Sorry for cross post. I come here for other views and opinions myself. Edit is certainally ok by admin no issue. I was not trying to promote that here, just we are talking about it even today.

Parkers is cheap close to Cannon, close to Loon close to food and enterainment options. right off the highway great people. I stayed there and left my daughters stuffed animal 5 years back.... they sent it back. called me to let me know it was on the way. I did not know it was even missing.
Woodwards is very popular, more of all inclusive only 2nd hand accounts on the place. Many of the Loon folk stay here if they are up for an extended stay. If you were going to ski this side of the Kank your ok.

As far a Loon reports. I may be bias I ski there 35 plus days a year. I'll give you an honest report from a different view than RivercOil. I think Steve will vouch for me.

If your going to ski Wildcat the River and Cannon and Loon Stay in gorham. I posted the linc above in this thread for the town and country. I really like the town and country. The deal was good, plus they do have some ticket deals also. Use the Alpine zone name it got discounts before.

As far at the March time frame to hook up.. I'll have to wait and see about the River. I'll be skiing weekends then mostly.

the rt 93 to rt3 to 115 to rt 2 is much faster from Loon and the way I go. I leave the River some afternoons and meet my family at Loon late in the day. Bar to Bar 1.40

Before Sugarloaf was tragically bought by Les Otten, there was a sign 3/4 of the way up the bottom baby lift which read "If you were at Sunday River, you'd be at the top now." Nuff said. If you are looking for long steep groomers, the Loaf is your best option.

yak and river, what is that $15 Mobil discount, where can I get it.
...

Um, at Mobil stations  three 8 gallon fillups gets you a 15$ off coupon good at any American Skiing area. They're not good on Saturdays or holidays.

After years of reading eastern reports here, I am not impressed by the reliability of those from Loon and Cannon. I'm not sure what the logistics of your schedule are. Are you in the Boston area on business or to visit friends/family but able to use intermittent days off to ski? That's the only reason to base as far south as Lincoln. If you have a whole week you should go farther north, whether in VT or NH/ME for better snow odds. From Gorham you have Wildcat and Sunday River easy access, and day trips to Sugarloaf (which by both terrain and time of year reputation sounds like your best eastern fit to me) are possible.

If it's a totally discretionary vacation, I'll question your sanity for going to New England from the DR in March vs. Denver, SLC or Mammoth/Tahoe.

Tony,

As a person who skis every weekend out of Lincoln, mostly at Loon, I would agree with your assessment of the snow reports from Loon. It used to be that they would provide glowing reports. You would get to the mountain only to find it was bullet proof ice and completely unskiable. Now, they have stopped giving much of anything by way of a report. At best, they list what trails are open.

I actually stumbled along this forum today in search of a place where real skiers without a board room agenda would share their candid observations about what was going on out there on the hill.

As for the original inquiry, Lincoln provides an excellent base of operations. It is reasonably close to Boston, and the various areas mentioned are all within 90 minutes at most from there. Waterville and Cannon are within 30 minutes; Bretton Woods and Attitash about 45; Wildcat about an hour; Burke and Sunday River 90 minutes.

Having said that, conditions this winter have been mediocre, at best. There has been very little natural snow cover and lots of warm weather during the past several weeks throughout the region. I don't think it's really worth making any sort of a long trip into NE for skiing, so Lincoln makes sense. Worst case, if you're not happy, you don't have too much of a drive to get back to Boston.

March will hopefully be a very different story. Last year, January was terrible, but February and March were amazing, with several deep powder days. I left those great conditions for a week at Steamboat. Things were so bad there that I almost left early to finish the week in NH. Fortunately, it snowed mid week.

The past two weekends have been glorious. Nearly Spring skiing conditions with enough snow on the trails to have fun, especially for crusing. Bump skiers are lamenting at the moment -- my son is on the Loon Freestyle team and until last week, they had nothing to train on for bumps or jumps. In fact, the Loon Freestyle Competition scheduled for this weekend had to cancel the Big Air event on Sunday. Only moguls and that's tomorrow.

Loon has great cruising on blue and black runs -- personal favorites include Flume, Walking Boss, Flying Fox and Blue Ox.

Waterville has good cruisers early in the day, before it gets too skied off. I think you can use your day pass from WV at Loon, so if you're not happy, you can get in the car and go back there. Better check first, though.

Burke is great as one other writer mentioned. However, they have limited snow making, so I would investigate further before making that long drive.

Cannon is a great mountain, also, but I wouldn't classify it as a cruiser. It also has limited snow making, but does tend to get more natural snow fall because of the geology. The front five are usually bump runs, but if groomed, they are short as cruisers. The top of the mountain was ruined when they took down the T-Bars and put up the chairlift. I like the mountain, but I would not classify it as a cruising hill.

Attitash is a lot like Loon with the cruisers, etc. and likely worth a visit.

Sunday River cancelled their Big Air competition two weeks ago, so they are probably hurting just as bad as anyone else, so again, probably not worth the longer drive.

No suggestions on places to stay.

Remydog,

My son is the Junior Seasonal snow board program at Loon.
similar paths.
Last weekend was the best of the year. IMO

Sat was great Sunday was nice also. Sunday Lower Flume was better than Sat, another day of the snow curing and grooming after snow making.

Going to the River this Sat, for a change. Loon on Sunday again. Heading north Soon.

Except for the intolerable lift lines on Saturday, I would agree. (Who plans two ski races and a snowboard expo on the same day?!?) The previous weekend had weather just a nice with no lift lines, so I would give that one higher marks.

It looks like rain currently blankets the entire area and that's due to be the forecast tomorrow, too. Someone just told me that Attitash has a foot new this week. I find that very hard to believe, given the warm temps and weather maps I've been studying all week.

The week before there were no lines. Being a Loon skier... I'm use to lines. I work around them pretty well. Time to head north.

remydog, welcome to the boards. looking forward to any reports you might be willing to contribute since you seem to ski a lot in the area. just two quick thoughts: burke is just over an hour from lincoln, definitely a lot less than 90 minutes. and regarding cannon:

Cannon is a great mountain, also, but I wouldn't classify it as a cruiser. It also has limited snow making, but does tend to get more natural snow fall because of the geology. i gotta disagree, i think cannon is a great mountain for cruising. snow making isn't that limited, they just don't refreshen the snow making trails after the weather turns south. they really hammer the snow making trails until they have a solid two feet minimum base depth to open, then they never refresh during the season. fresh snow is definitely preferable because of this, but the snow making terrain at cannon is pretty extensive. the front five all generally have bumps, but all but paulie's are also groomed out almost daily. gary's and rocket only have a very small sliver on the right side not groomed, zoomer gets groomed straight down the middle, and avalanche gets about a 60% groom. the tbars were before my time, but tramway, profile, skylight, upper ravine, and upper cannon all make for good upper mountain cruising that can be lapped off the quad. just a different take on the mountain from a regular. cheers :)

Thanks All! 1 month before planned sojourn, and my shoulder fissure is telling me to hold off... Damn! Next Wednesday I'll see the Doc, take it from there.

And I know March will be a grand snow month in all these places we've been talking about!

All the best!

It just occurred to me that in Gpaul's quest for long steep groomers, we have never directed him to the ultimate area for that: Sun Valley.

Marc 1, Tony.....................................1 Yep, both good input.

Tony, we've been twice to Sun Valley for 2 days each time, once blizzard and wind, next time super sunny. And BOTH times Great! Long, Long, and Steep Groomers, not crowded, good lifts!

If we return to UT next year, we may do our "standard" in that neck of the woods": land SLC, ski few days there, drive to Jackson H. for 2-3 days, 1 day Targhee, and another 2-3 days Sun V., back to SLC for 5-6 final days. Maybe this time I'll drive up to Montana to get it under my belt.

Damn it's hot in the DR^*)(*^&%.

Cheers!

I should have clarified that my Sun Valley comment was "for future reference" rather than an immediate recommendation for Gpaul's March trip. I was reminded because a NASJA photographer who lives there just sent out a bunch of powder pics from the epic January there.

But it's still a heads-up, like for Crested Butte last year. If you've ever wanted to go to Sun Valley but been put off by its natural snow record, this is a great year to try it. Almost double normal snow so far this season.

admin is welcome to recast/split this off into the western section if he so desires.
