Stowe 12/18

Dave and I met up with Dylan G. again today for what was another awesome day
in the Stowe trees. The wide open hardwoods all the way down to RT 108 are
hard to beat. The amount of snow up there in Mansfield's bowels is
impressive. All in all, trees and a lot of snow make the right combination.

I love knowing its going to be a good day when I see this on the drive in.

We bushwhacked around at times as we skied from shot to shot all around the
gondola. The best stuff was definitely in the side-country glades like
Angle Food and the Bench...we took run after run getting reacquainted with
this flank of Mansfield. While yesterday we skied the southern end of the
mountain on terrain off the triple, today we skied only at Mansfield North.

I'll be skiing all week. Maybe I'll ski the quad tomorrow. Spruce
Thursday? Whole mountain tour on Friday? The options are limitless right now.

Yes, perhaps it's powderfreak's photography skills contributing to the impression of Stowe's superiority.

I know the feeling about how good it is and I wish I could have kept skiing. Unfortunately I have to work and vacation/sick days aren't unlimited. :( Way to go Scott.

Thanks River. I'm using an older camera that is on its last legs (but not as bad as my old one) and we drilled a screw into it to keep the battery compartment shut. I'm getting a new Cannon for X-mas so look for the photo quality to go up. I feel like I've got an eye for it and I like to experiment with different points of view. For the cliff photos, I had wedged myself between the cliff and this tree. I wanted to get that "flying out from behind" look and I think I got it.

Its fun to mix photog and skiing...I love it.

I love it also.

Unfortunately I had trouble with Lucky's digital camera for action shots Sunday PM and Monday AM. However I went to get my old film camera for Monday PM and I should have some pretty good pictures of Lucky out of it.

That first cliff drop photo is magazine quality IMHO. Perhaps you should try to sell it, say to Stowe's marketing dept.?

The contrast in colors is really nice with most of those photos. Lots of different things popping out at you but the focus on the skiers still remains. Good light and good colors are a hard combo. "Different" angles is something I strive for with mixed results. I look for things that make me say "Hmmmm, never seen that aspect quite that way before." The hardest thing is capturing good quality action at the right time while also putting the action in the context of the surrounding. Focusing on the action while also painting the picture of where the action is taking place, why the skier is enjoying it so much, etc. Good stuff.

Well if this is going to turn into a photo discussion, I'll chime in....

I'm actually a freelance pro-photog (when not putting out the IT fires at the hospital, writing local sports or maintaining the HS sports web site) and shoot the other type of skiing and some golf (Have worked the 4 US Opens here in Pinehurst and a number of AWSA championships): Will be in Stowe Jan 20-26 and would love to exchange some photo work for some local knowledge/tour of the trees if the conditions warrant. (btw: don't let the NC address fool you, can ski the steep and deep with a camera, grew up at Pleasant Mtn ME, raced "easterns" for 8 years and 4 years in college (Div II)) here's some ski examples:

However, most of my Stowe photos look like this:

That's my daughter - she's not quite ready for the tree powder/action....
Funny story, last summer Stowe Mtn was looking for a Dir of IT (my title) and I submitted a resume, they never called back..

If you ever get into high alpine powder with a good snowboarder, you can sometimes get the same picture effect as those water skiers.
