Went up to Stowe again on Sunday to take advantage of the massive snowstorm. Bummer. The mountain was in worse shape than it had been 10 days ago -- a bit thinner and significantly more icy. Almost all of the ungroomed open runs were "technical" to say the least -- not really much fun at all. The woods were much better, though thin and not without significant icy patches as well as open water lower on the mountain.

The mountain looked like this:

Woods on skier's left of the top of the quad were my favorites. Bypass chutes offered a number of great lines:

Lower mountain woods offered plenty of this:

and unfortunately also plenty of this:

Nice pics! I talked with a couple guys who skied Smuggs on Tuesday 2/14 and they said it snowed all day just like at Jay. I would bet Stowe got some too.
You can see from your pics that lots of nasties are still lurking just beneath the surface.
I had to jib and jump a couple logs at Jay that were across open water down low, particularly in Everglade. The crux of Everglade was a foot of snow over crust and ice, making pillow hopping a prefered technique. I had a couple close calls in there with the snow sliding out from under me.

After seeing your Jay report I did wish that I had postponed my trip a couple days.

As it was, having a pair of rock skis made the day much more enjoyable -- I ran right across rocks and stumps and the occasional log without worrying at all, and actually stepped into a small creek down low on the mountain once. Sounds a lot like your descriptions of everglade (without the foot of fresh!).

Still, given the weather this year I've been pleasantly surprised by the skiing the past few weeks.

rained like lleh all day today. Lightning struck the quad, then 102mph gusts at the summit. slush conditions today, forecast for zero degrees tonight should make for an awesome GS skate day on Saturday. They should probably sell a couple more $1M+ "cottages" this weekend....

Holy cow. Sounds like a wonderful day on the hill.

On the positive side, maybe this will mean another $25 day soon.

Wish there weren't quite so many discounts this year.
