Sugarloaf also blew snow

The pictures are back on their site now.

THAT was a totally unexpected event. Sugarloaf has been out of the early-opening and PR-snow game since they came under the ASC umbrella.

Is it possible :?: that because of its' geographic location that Sugarloaf will become the new "first to open" resort? After all, the temps are colder and they could open top to bottom and stay open earlier. Just a thought, I don't know Sugarloaf well at all.

I have my doubts. First of all, it's a big place, and that's an awful lot of mountain to cover to gain a top-to-bottom opening. More importantly, however, is that the enviable location in the far north, temperature wise, is also a bane in that they're much further from the population centers of the NE the way that K is.

For the most part, I agree with Marc. I wonder though if they could pull off one top to bottom run off the Super Quad? Still, its perceived "remoteness" may make it tough to captilize on in terms of a marketing approach. Really though; is Sugarloaf that much further from, say Boston, than Killington is?

Either way, as I've mentioned before, I'm betting on an early season opening from either K, Da Loaf or SR to further promote the All For One. Of course it all depends on the weather, but I think the November K opening may be a classic example of under-promise/over-deliver. We can hope, right?

SL's strategy the past few years has been to stay closed and make as much snow as possible to open for the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.

I think they have three trails (2 ways down) that have an abnormally high hydrant density (Sluice, Spillway, Boardwalk). None of them are accessible from the Superquad without significant snowmaking on traverses (an extra 1000 acre-feet of snow, easy.)

They just don't have the skier days or the compressed air capacity to warrant outgunning K-Mart or SR, despite the better early-season climatic conditions. Sunday River can make snow significantly faster than the Loaf. You can really see the difference between SR's opening day and the Loaf's.

(That said, SR NEEDS the snowmaking. Elevation matters.)

About 90 minutes more. More importantly, however, it is that much further from Hartford, NYC, NJ, Philadelphia,...

i really don't think sugarloaf can qualify for the early season game being so far away from skiing centers. who is going to drive all the way up to the loaf just to ski a hand full of green and blue groomers? locals would be all over it, but no one is going to spend big bucks for a weekend trip for only a few trails. just doesn't seem like it would be worth the drive when K is so much closer and is able to fire up more terrain quicker. not that the loaf couldn't blanket tons of acres, but without skier demand and weekend packages booked, it simply wouldn't be cost effective for them.

Let's not forget the price of gas. It's not as cheap to get to the hill anymore.Last year it cost me about $35US to drive to Jay and back. This year I'm estimating it to be close to $50.
How much more will it cost resorts to run groomers, snow machines and snowremoval equipment this year?

I'd rather spend my cash skiing early season at SR instead of SL. SR blows better quality snow, and can cover a trail in a day or two. The Loaf, on the other hand, spends a week or more laying wet glop on Sluice and Spillway.
True the glop makes good base, but by early season I've been jonesing for turns all summer, and it's nice to lay some turns in half decent snow.

I guess I'm just not fussy...I would lay out cash to ski on a run covered with ice cubes from a refrigerator if someone took the time and effort to put them on some decent terrain   .

The last I heard, Sunday River was planning on opening on Nov. 12th. We can only hope.
