The Good and the Bad News

i was also there june 10th with my girlfriend and dog.
Did you ski? If so, the only skiers/boarder that I saw were there when I was at the Bowl. We arrived as a group were finishing off. Good memory about recalling me and SuperNat.

snow was amazing with close to 500 vert still available and better snow than memo day. we may have seen you two on way up.

Very good estimate on vertical available.

I mesured my first run from the top of the snow and not the Bowl all the way to the trailhead, as being 130 meters in verical (427 feet).

June 10th TR...

ya, lesley and i enjoyed 6 nice runs and were gettin out as you were approaching your 1st. i opted to ski that day cuz on memo day the skiing was so good, i had to go back and june 10 had the best weather window and provided even better skiing. the snowboarder is our buddy fred.

I think heli around Mt. Washington wouldn't fly too often with the chronic winds. I think heli or snowcat in the Chic-Chocs would be an excellent idea. Much more terrain to work with I think. And with its remote location I think you need something a cut above the normal ski experience.

that's it, now you just leave the chic choc out of this right now tony. as a yearly frequenter of the chic chocs since the mid 90's i will asure you that the terrain is extremely limited with no room for an operation such as you suggest, heh heh.

i just saw the 144hr+ 850mb .. YUK!!!!!
Well Stowe recieved around 3 or so on Friday night. The fog was pretty tough on the upper slopes but the mountain skiied great.. it is a shame we are bit to north for the monday event

thanx for the report. guess i'll stay south to ski till i hear different for now. western maine and parts of nh picked up 10-12 between thurs-fri and are skiing well. a friend of mine skied cannon on fri and said it was aweful, coverage and underfoot feel. he then skied wildcat and said night and day difference with everything skiing well.
oh well, we'll see, pats peak could be the jackpot-hee hee. where it snow,i go.
have fun

I'd still like to see powderfreak's take on the confidence level for a January 9-13 forecast made on December 29.

I've seen several other forecasters with the exact same call as Powderfreak, unfortunately.

Tony, is that 5-10 foot burial of Tahoe still on?

this warm up looks horrible and it has excellent model agreement, bottom line get as much skiing as you can in the next few days.

i beg to differ, i'm sure this comes as a shock. however, this "warming trend" couldn't come at a better time as we (in the know) easterners have been spoiled riding this powder high. it's time to come down off that high so we don't start taking things for granted. plus, if we get this "warm up" it'll be all over the news down south and people will give up on winter and get the clubs out and such. when it starts dumping again it'll be all ours.
your negativity is understood but there's always a positive to pull out of it.

bring on the heat!
january corn in high spaces

I fully agree about looking for a way to look on the bright side of the warm up. Spring corn skiing, especially on places not normally good bets for January, is definitely looking on the positive side. But "bring on the heat"??? We'll take it and deal with it but I would rather keep up the snow fall and colder temps.

Until next week though, time to let it rip. Mad River tomorrow. Rog may have convinced me to look at Gunstock Wednesday night since I can't get out of work during the day. :D

that, "bring on the heat" thing was more like, "if i ask for heat maybe we'll get cold" reversed psychology or something. i can't decide on tomorrow yet. i'd like to go start west where it may start snowing during the day for fresh in the p.m. or go somewhere that might be less crowded, wed up for grabs, hard to go wrong anywhere, thurs-gulf of slides or doublehead cuz once it's tracked i ain't goin back. or once it's tracked it's crap. ah hell i won't be sleeping much tonight, haven't even packed yet. figured i'd be mellow from skiing untracked all morning-gettin spoiled!
love

The Sierra dump is also agreed on by all models and is supposed to start January 3.

But if it were supposed to start January 9 it would actually happen as predicted no more than half the time IMHO.

was gonna start west, meaning western new england but it now appears that the snow is gonna fall heaviest possibly in the saddleback/loaf region with up to 2 feet by wed afternoon. cold and windy also will bring skins per usual. thank god for t bars.
will head to pinkham this a.m. for mount washington morning and wildcat afternoon turns, hopefully snow starts around 1 pm. then bee line north to rangeley for saddleback, gotta get in them maine trees.
really wanted to hit magic today cuz the snow will start early but the cutiepie got a little wound at the thought of transnavigating NE to chase the storms like i have in the past. heck in my, "me only" days i'd a chased it all the way to newbrunswick, quit my job, headed north to live in my van at the base of mont albert and speak "not french" for a couple of months skiing and touring my favorite terrain in the world-not a typo.

am i just rambling? ya and giving my rad little ski chick a few extra minutes of shut eye before i pull a yellow lab "gotta get out tongue dangling" performance on her.

Have a good one icelanticskier ...and Happy New Year to all.

We're going to head out my daughter and I and make our own local turns in the new snow we got overnight (snowing now). Plan was to head out further, but late night and busy day yesterday conspired against me.

Well as we await the start of the “thaw” have to say this has been the best start in years. No matter where you are skiing there is no problem finding new snow to track up. Today was more of the same thing, deep snow in low elevation woods around the neighborhood, The problem now is we are getting spoiled; kids are expecting boot deep as a minimum. Eastern reality is going to be hard to take.

Gotta say... "The Good(s)" sure was good.

Once again - Scott's post, read very quickly in a restaurant with wireless net, inspired me to change plans and score. Skied 9 consecutive days - so I can handle a little (melt) down time. Jan 1-3 were some of the best ski days of my life, and there was no one on the hill.

Thanks Scott.
