What has been a really dismal season for me (this would be my 4th day only) would end up being spectacular.
In the parking lot by 8:45. Top half of the mountain was socked in by fog. Immediately knew that i was going to be speding the day doing laps off the bottom half of the mountain.
Insult: with only 1/3 of the moutain open, still full priced tickets! $65 for the day! ( I later found that patrick had sent me a PM with top secret instructions on how to obtain super secret savings at T. Let that be a lesson: Check in with FTO before heading to the hills)
TO the GONDY!
Warm up on Kandahar then another on Beauvallon. Knowing that it would be a bit firmer on the north side, and seeing that the Expo express was open, headed over the top, down Beauchemin, and started my laps on the expo quad, below the fog. Several laps of La Griffe, and Fuddle Duddle. SOft corn to downright slush. I was ready to go back in time 12 years, to the last time I skied expo. Seeing huge bumps on varrying terrian, I couldn't resist. Maybe i should have. I'm not in as great shape as i was when i was 14. First run nearly killed me. So i licked my wounds on Windigo, with some lower angle bumps. Felt better, and did some more laps on La Griffe. Did expo again, and it was much better.
Decided to go up to the top and ski some favorites: Marrie claude Asselin, Banzia, Geant.
Time for a 15 minute lunch (I've got a lot of skiing to do to make up for the season!)
Many laps of MCA, Banzai, Lowel Thomas, Le Tunnel.
Around 2:30 the fog lifted from the top, and I decided to head over to the south side. Hit McCulloch, then it was time for bumps!
Vertige (good face, middle completely gone), Grand Prix, a break on Beauvalon, then the last run of the season, just as the fog came back was Vertige.
I have to say, my bump technique came back as the day went on, and I realized that on steep bumps, the only way is a good aggressive stance.
WIth my legs totally shot, i headed back to the parking lot. Just as i put the skis in the car, it started to rain.
Since i was by myself (the wife didn't feel like coming today), I didn't have to wait at all on the hill, and I think i managed around 35K verts.
All in all, a great way to end the season.
(The next day, I could barely walk i was so stiff.)
