Station Mont-Tremblant deplores this weekend's 24-hour union-imposed work stoppage

Mont-Tremblant, December 15th, 2005 ? Station Mont Tremblant learned this afternoon, regretfully, that the union is preparing a work stoppage this weekend, from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.

Senior management at Station Mont-Tremblant are upset that the union has resorted to drastic means while discussions are underway, yet they still remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached before Christmas.

An unfortunate situation for skiers and vacationers
Station Mont-Tremblant will do everything possible to satisfy guests who have reservations this weekend. We are asking that skiers not show up on Saturday, in order to avoid a disappointing situation. Meanwhile, if all goes according to plan, we will be welcoming skiers on Sunday morning, as usual.

Many company departments are mobilizing to offer services on the mountain. The slopes will be open, as well as the hotels. Restaurants, shops, and businesses in Tremblant village will be operating as usual. Our Snow School and Childcare Services will be closed on Saturday. For up-to-the-minute information, please visit our website at: http://www.tremblant.ca.

We hope that this situation is temporary, and that the union will negotiate a winning agreement for salaries, for the company, and consequently, for the entire region.

Strike cripples Quebec ski resort

Unionized employees at one of Quebec's most popular ski resorts have decided to remain on strike following a 24-hour work stoppage.

Jean Lortie, of the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), told CBC.ca that workers at Mont Tremblant voted "overwhelmingly" on Saturday to remain off the job.

Members of La Confédération des syndicats nationaux carry picket signs during a strike at Mont Tremblant, Quebec Saturday.
Only about one-third of the ski runs at Mont Tremblant were open Saturday as unionized employees staged a 24-hour walkout to back demands for higher wages and the introduction of a pension plan.

They have been in a legal strike position since Dec. 12. Saturday's walkout involved 1,500 Mont Tremblant employees, including those responsible for ski instruction, building maintenance, parking lots, bars and banquet halls.

Lortie said employees earn an average of $13.95 an hour. Their union wants a 15 per cent wage increase over three years. Lortie said that will bring their wages in line with other hotel workers across Quebec.

Management at Mont Tremblant said it remains hopeful that a settlement with CSN can be reached before Christmas. It was advising skiers not to show up Saturday, to avoid disappointment.

"We hope that this is temporary, and that the union will negotiate a winning agreement for salaries, for the company, and consequently, for the entire region," it said in a news release posted on the resort's website.
