Give me a HSQ...I'm skiing, I don't want to work for it.
Once again Patrick and I are more often in agreement than not. I don't spend much time earning turns because the lift service at Mammoth goes so long. And when it ends it's a major expedition at high altitude to get at any worthwhile snow. In East lift service is history by early May. Tucks has no altitude issue on the hike. I suspect I'd be up there if I lived in the East for at least May and June.

Also, in April lift-served terrain quality is usually far inferior to Tucks, so by admin's quality/quantity criterion he might be there then too. How often did admin ski Tucks when he lived in the East?

I managed to ski at 63 different areas in 46 months
This is another part of Patrick's fanaticism to which I can relate.

I would say your August and/or September had way more pathetic snow than any of my days in the last 46 months.
Pucon? Admin's 2005 August/September ski days cost a lot in grunt work but close to zero $ or vacation time. When spending much of the latter, the threshold of quality needs to be considerably higher. Particularly when those $ and time could be spent alternatively in France, Utah or interior B.C.

cost/benefit analysis
I try to do this in planning every trip. Of course, weather happens and sometimes it ends up looking masochistic. I'm sure some of you would say that about my Mt. Fuji climb. I try to make my criticisms of Patrick's trips relate to what was likely forseeable, as opposed to the unexpected developments.
