Tucks, 4/26-4/27

The rain forecast for last Saturday turned to snow as the freezing line dropped well below the
5-6000 foot level that was anticipated. Radio
chatter indicated that it was snowing on The
Kanc' (peak elev there is 2835'). Snowfall was
wet 'n heavy and when combined with the snowfall
during the prior week and the ubiquitous Presidential winds, an estimated additional 18"
was left at the apex of The Lip. The snowpack is
alive 'n well at Tucks.

On Sunday, conditions were smashed 'taters.
Skiing was best on the old scoured surfaces where
there was some decent corn. Those 'taters got
pretty sticky in the afternoon but I had a blast. Left 'n Right Gullies are in excellent
shape as is Chute and several Headwall lines.
Ditto for Hillman's and Dodges Drop still looks
doable. The ice however, has been hanging in
there on the upper ramparts of The Bowl longer
than anticpated and it all has to fall one of
these days so be careful and aware in addition to
having fun.

Times are tough, but Tucks World has been especially great this year. There was still a buzz about Easter Weekend and the joy surrounding
it. Perhaps in an era of SARs, 9-11, and a
sluggish economy, people are realizing some good
old fashioned values such as good exercise, some
good fresh air in the outdoors and friends 'n camaraderie as opposed to money, materialism and
pop culture. Much good kharma up there running
over the dogma of gloom 'n doom of these days.

What you said "Perhaps in an era of SARs, 9-11......" is so true.More people need to realize theres more to life then money, power and whats on tv.In young people such as me, most of us do not understand the "old fashioned values" and just realy on TV and the media. I hope to go to tucks for the first time this year, even if I can't ride I still want to enjoy the "atomosphere"of it all.

Rideon

p.s I know this doens't relate to sking or anything and I sorry for that

You said it Mark, there's has been much good kharma up there. I'm starting to look forward to the weatherman forecasting another rainy weekend, if they keep turning out like the last three!

But now that you mention it, the scariest moment I had Sunday was not worrying about slides, crevasses, falling ice or rocks - it was the guy hiking up who was having an uncontrollable "I can't stop coughing" fit. I wanted to ask if he'd been to Toronto lately... That's when I knew I've been watching too much CNN.

There were some close seconds, though. Two idiots bashing moguls on Hillmans came dangerously close to me on my way up, both way out of control, both ended up falling shortly past me. One of them actually managed to take out a snowboarder - so much for "sorry dude" stereotypes. Then there were another pair of goofballs skiing down the hiking trail mid-afternoon, also looking for a collision.

Hopefully those guys will figure out they belong at Kmart "showing off" and "breaking the rules"; or maybe they'll mellow out and have a little more respect for the mountain and those they share it with. They were very out of place amongst the many great people I've met on the trail the past few weeks.
