Turkey and Turns Not Looking Likely in NE

i'd rather ski wachusett in perfect corn than anywhere in the wasatch in chopped up crap

It's amazing how every topic turns into an East Coast - West Coast war..... I feel like skiing is now part of the Hip Hop culture.

Ain't no way you could compare Massachusetts corn skiing with Utah / Wyoming corn.... PLUS out West you could ski corn into late June. :sabre fight:

He wasn't talking about corn, and I didn't read it as E vs W - more like good corn at [nearby] Wachusett trumps bad crud anywhere else [where significant travel would be involved].

Sorry for my misinterpretation. I agree that corn skiing is much better than crud, crust, dust on crust and any other variation of melted and hard frozen snow.

But just for fun..... let's talk East vs. West!!!

i ski amazing corn, like untracked and non suncupped or dirty each year right in to july on mt washington in nh.

learn yer side of the country BBD. there's better skiing than most would fathom/imagine.

p.s. i just use the wasatch as an example cuz i've skied there a bunch and it just rolls off of my tongue. i really meant chopped up snow out west. no east/west intended, just my .02.

Isn't BBD in Philly or some other MASH location? As :dead horse: many times, that tips the balance toward skiing more West than East.

With regard to the early season corn I'm having some regrets about not squeezing in that October opening at Mammoth during the baseball playoffs. The corn on Oct. 17 was probably a lot better than the WRODs + dust over coral reef they have now.

I see what your saying Tony. In Philly that is certainly the case, but NYC is still close enough that EC is still going to be frequented more often than out west. 3 out of 4 days for me are spent on the EC. Just in terms of those numbers the majority of my "best" ski days have been spent on the EC. Those days include rain induced corn followed by sun, epic powder, and sunny wonderful spring corn days. As for hard snow, you can avoid it if you're smart with your timing. Frankly, if my skis are properly tuned I can ski hard snow, if not even enjoy it, as long as it's hard and not glare.

Next year, not this year, due to financial constraints, I shall be foregoing the western ski trip for Europe. From NYC, the prices are similar. The rest of the time I will be hitting up the EC, which is just fine for me.

For me trips out west are destination trips, so Europe is fairly compatible, whereas EC skiing is backyard skiing.

I've always said that more eastern skiers should mix/alternate those trips (Europe vs. West) than actually do.

We deconstructed the NYC case in much detail here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8082 To me the mix there depends on whether you have a car. If so you have more flexibility to optimize timing and choice of eastern area based upon weather/conditions. Without a car, better to fly off to Europe or the West for most of your skiing.

Veering back on-topic....

From the shape of the lower mountain at Killington yesterday afternoon and a look at the weather, I would say that the odds are slim that Killington will manage to get back open for Thanksgiving day. Friday is more likely. I'm going to make a few runs today and deal with the snud (snow+mud) on the lower mountain.

Nope. That's middle Chute under the Snowdon Quad. Eyeballing the topo map on Google Maps, that's at about 3100'. They've been having a big problem getting the bottom 600' covered this November. Middle Chute faces east-northeast. Lower Bunny Buster faces east-southeast.

Killington management is publicly saying they're thinking of putting in a surface lift to get people back to the top to download for fall skiing. Now that they've figured out that the long season is a big part of the Killington brand, they need to unwind the problem caused when ASC got rid of the midstation and download capability when they removed the old Killington double chair and replaced it with a gondola.

I've been :dead horse: for years. It could help the other end too, with the Canyon runs being more sheltered from sun than Superstar.

Wow. That seems like a big deal. I guess it's always easier to admit someone else screwed up.

Seems funny for Kmart to have a surface lift in a crucial role. Still I like it.

Bring back the Beast - new logo aside....Killington SHOULD be a major force with a long season. IMO.

I've been saying since day 1 that the replacement of the Peak Double (with mid) with the K1 gondola was a huge mistake (again) to their trademark first and in the East. The injured Beast (to the transfer of Spring skiing to Superstar) died with the K1.

No, they just need to connect those upper chairs to the gondola for downloading, as now contemplated. Spiff up the food/amenities at the upper station and they will make more $ out of it too.

I'm impressed that Tony is not only able to give detailed lift and snowmaking observations about Killington from his perch in LA, but has now moved into food and beverage.

I'm only half joking; it sounds like he's skied there more than me. The closest I've come to Kmart is six days at Pico.

This photo brings back memories of my wife and I driving 7 hours to Killington during Thanksgiving 1999 only to find fog and mud. Killington said that they were open for skiing right up to time that we got in the car that morning. That was my last trip to K-Mart. Sadly, that's were I learned to ski 38 years ago on Snowshed on my Skitique skis wih Cubco bindings. :ski:
