U.S. Presidency #47

inflation is more what the bond market is worried about.
It's what I am worried about. I have the semi significant funds from a real estate sale. It frightens me as much to have it sitting in cash on the sidelines than it does to deploy it into already overcooked markets.

A few quotes from Trump’s anti-Canada rants from today.

« One of the Worst Abusers is Canada. I don't want Canadian cars, I don't want Canadian parts, I don't want Canadian anything. They've been ripping us off for decades, and it's going to stop. This should have happened long ago with other Presidents, just as stopping Iran should have happened long ago. «
Putting Canada and Iran in the same category.

“Let all Canadian Companies that are doing business with America move to the United States, immediately. Many of them are Companies that moved out years ago due to stupid U.S. Leadership. When you move back, there are no TARIFFS!”

« For many years, the USA has been losing more than 60 Billion Dollars a year with Canada. Why??? Our long ago stolen businesses are now coming back to America in order to avoid paying tariffs. They are lining up, just like the rest of the World!!!”

60 billion dollars??? If you removed the Canada cheap oil exports, the US would have a trade surplus with Canada.
Stolen businesses? How many businesses moved south since FTA started in 1989?

Trump is a nut and a moron. If Canada uses its crazy power like the US, who knows how far will he go? He’s already threaten to invade Greenland.
Canada extreme actions like adding an export tax on oil, natural gas, electricity, potash to the US? Choke the Welland canal and St Lawrence Seaway to US export via the Atlantic.

Everything he writes is turning Canadians reluctant to buy or travel to the US.

I’m not just referring to Mr Trump and his doings when I note that the world is a mess at the moment. It’s certainly as worrying as I can remember (since about the mid 1980s when I became old enough to partly understand global politics and order). Can any of you veterans remember feeling as despondent about things as now? I’m guessing the 70s were a concern with the Cold War, Vietnam, oil shocks and general high inflation.

1968 was the year with maximum unrest in the US in my lifetime: MLK and RFK assassinations, lots of inner city riots plus Vietnam protests.

2020 had some parallels. Some of my still Republican friends took exception when I said the 2020 election was 1968 minus Nixon: Biden = Hubert Humphrey, Trump = George Wallace.

I don't want Canadian cars, I don't want Canadian parts
The US and Canadian auto industries have been intertwined for decades. I can't believe that the US auto companies aren't screaming bloody murder about this. I've read they are losing billions from the tariffs.
