We decided that Friday would be the pick of the week as far as weather goes, and we were rewarded with a sunny 40 ish day with nice spring corn conditions at Waterville. The summit temp was 41 degrees at 10:00 and climbed to about 45, maybe a lttle warmer on sunnyside. They are offering $27 adult tickets on Fridays in January, and they had a "spin the wheel" thing going in front of the ticket window where you could win free tickets, etc. I was a "loser" and got my $27 ticket and complimentary brownies for 2 (only available at Sunnyside lodge). My buddy Matt got a two-day ticket for $22 plus a voucher for another free day. On the way home, he gave his ticket to some guys we met at the Mad River Tavern.
Early morning runs down White Cap, Sels, and Chute were firm underneath with a loose granular groom on top that was softening in the sun. Gema was groomed, soft, and fast. Our first run down True Grit around 10:00 was nasty, but by 11:00 it had softened to mashed potatoes and was the run of the day. We pounded out 11 runs before lunch at noon. We stayed in the sun for the most part after lunch, but took another Sels after lunch and found it was strting to firm up as the sun fell lower. About 2:00 we felt the gravitational pull of cold microbrews on the deck of the Schwendi Hut.
As you can see from the only shot I got before camera batteries died, we had True Grit to ourselves all day.
I tried out the new Legend 8800's to shake them down before the Utah trip next weekend. It took a couple runs before I had figured out I had to slow down and do more turns - definitely a different ride than my X-Screams, but they were really sweet turning boards in the sun-baked crud. I can't wait to let 'em rip through some fresh pow.
Waterville weather was looking like rain for today, turning to snow tonight with flurries Sunday. If the intensity doesn't slack off, they might get some snow to stick during the transition. If not, it will be dust on crust. Man, we need a huge dump!
